Her " religion " was intermittent along with her state of health and had appeared to worsen when she was at WHF with her mother------------which is what Colin had said. I would suppose that Sheila, being controlled by her mother, became a " different person " in her company having to conform to whatever June read out from " the good book ". Sheila had to endure some of the horror stories from within the Bible as a young child so would have subconsciously learned certain passages,Psalms and chapters only for them to come back and haunt her later on.
When this sort of abuse is drilled into you from early on it's very damaging to people who are vulnerable like Sheila was as it would have festered inside her mind, especially when her mood had been low as Sheila would have thought that she herself was to blame for her failures in life and put it down to " God's will ".
Everything that Sheila did went against what her mother wished.
One thing that has stuck in my mind was when Sheila was made to have an abortion. Neither Sheila nor Colin wanted that, but neither had any say in the matter. To grow up thinking that of your mother,a supposed Christian and regular church goer beggars all understanding.Sheila was 17,not a child, and Colin slightly older. I just find it very disturbing.
It's no wonder Sheila suffered after that. I don't know anyone who wouldn't have. It just fills me with horror.
