Sounds like a script for the Jeremy Kyle show.

Just reading a very sad story in the Echo about a young man ( 27 ) who'd committed suicide over his gambling habit and mounting debt caused by it. A few days earlier he'd enjoyed a holiday abroad, laughing and joking and nobody knew anything other than the lad was always jolly. How sad is that ? Not even his parents had any idea, bless him. The most hurtful thing about all this is that he couldn't tell anyone, aww.
Apparently, just after his holiday he'd put a message on Facebook which only his aunt noticed and by the time she got to his house the police and ambulance was there. I think that's so very sad.
You never know the minute.

That may well be about what happens when the stiff upper lip remains inflexible.

This is also in the echo http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/jailed-week-pervert-science-teacher-10923512

Which I think is relevant to this thread.

Not necessarily, stiff upper-lips are few and far between in the depths of Liverpool. In fact, they've become a rarity. This was more from the shame of letting people down from a hard-working family.
No disrespects to the family, but the area was Toxteth.

Forgive the observation, but if this is an area in which SUP's are rare, I'd imagine that so, too, would be the concept of shame.

There still remains to be an air of respectability in those families who are working and because of this a certain amount of shame would also be present. Feelings of embarrassment for the family too would also tie in.

"Respectability" is an enforcer of the SOL. It's not considered "respectable" to reveal feelings of any kind. One doesn't get to choose.

It just saddened me Steph,to think that something as trivial as it was would make someone take their life for. A decent young man with a good family. It just didn't/doesn't seem right.

Against those who do commit real crimes but go on living ?  It tells me that those in prison have no shame. Even Shipman killed himself in the end,but as for the young man in question whose only " crime " was bringing shame and embarrassment on the family was something that everyone would have got over in a short space of time.
It shows the stark difference in criminals and this young man who committed suicide.

It also suggests that, had he felt able to share what was happening, a terrible tragedy may have been avoided.
