How is it incorrect? June may have had fears, but that doesn't mean fostering was possible and June was CONCERNED that they might end up being fostered, whereas Jeremy stated that June seemed all for it. It is opposite to what she said to Colin's mother, she didn't want them to be fostered!

I don't know enough about dogs to be sure Lookout.  I would have thought dogs barked when they heard anyone coming, either because they knew it was someone they loved or because they were guarding against strangers.  I have been told by dog owners that this isn't true.

when dogs hear other dogs bark they tend to start barking themselves.

I think Crispy just barked anyway whether visitors were known or not,but many dogs don't bark when they know the visitor,though I don't know if it would be the same if the visitor got in through a window in the middle of the night.
The GSD that I had would have stayed silent until the person was inside the house then gone for the seat of the pants without barking.

Well, as no one reported hearing them bark, either they didn't OR they barked so regularly that people ceased to notice it OR Jeremy provided them both with their favourite treats OR Jeremy came back to the house on some pretext before Nevill locked up for the night.

I agree these are all possibilities.  My cat never barks so it's difficult for me to know.

One of my cats shoots under my bed when anyone's at the door. A fat lot of use that is.

Lookout/Maggie I think Bruce would have barked if anyone had approached the house late at night as that would have been something different but if the murders were carried out by somebody already in the house they would not bark but most dogs are terrified by gunshots unless they are gun dogs.

Bruce was a gun dog so would have been used to the sound,as he used to get taken to shoots,probably to retrieve the pheasants.
