Visually if he saw no blood on the garment he may not have even washed it and simply threw it back in the wardrobe. He was a farmer and not a scientist. He would not be forensically minded  He wasn't aware of stuff like backspatter etc. He wouldn't probably be aware of what forensic testing could yield ( microdroplets of blood etc)

You made a good point about 1985 and 2024. In this day and age we know all about DNA, Forensics etc. Back in 1985 it was miniscule. DNA was 87 88?? Pitchfork first came a cropper for it.

Too be honest he must have been shattered,  he had worked a 14 hour day just hours before.

Didn't AE say his skin looked darker?

Suspect he had blackened up a bit on his face. To match his recently dyed hair.

Showering that off would take a bit of time.

If he knew beforehand the rifle with silencer was too long for Sheila, wouldn't he have taken it off before shooting her?

Seems he only realised after he had shot her. Then made a rushed decision to put the silencer away without cleaning it.
