If Neville was standing up prior to being knocked out, I can't believe he would fall onto his knees with his head landing exactly on top of a coal scuttle.

Nevill was shot three more times downstairs and had his back burnt three times.

Nevill was certainly knocked out and perhaps already dead when Bamber decided to position Nevill's head on top of the coal scuttle.  Bamber could  then easily proceed with burning Nevill's back and firing three more head shots.

Hi Jay, good post have a look through this thread it might answer some of your questions or give a better insight into how and why the police handled it the way they did?  It doesn't answer everything by the way.

Thanks Justice, I've just had a read through that and, from my perspective, the police response to the questions does seem a bit damage limitation-esque, the following response is interesting with regards to priority:
Question 'Who takes credit now for the success of the investigation?'
Reply (Offr Stone) 'Can I answer that? i don't think we can talk about: a. Looking for scapegoats or b. To whom we should direct kudos'
Then again, I have a suspicious mind with regards to police in the 1980s -but I'll try not to let it cloud my judgement!

My question related to how the police approached the crime scene and if that led to the investigation not being conducted in the manner that it should have been if murder was a possibility, the Nevill/coal scuttle discussion was a reply to a wrong assumption that I had made when exploring the possibility that Sheila and Junes bodies could have been moved for whatever reason prior to the crime scene photograph.

For what reason would Jeremy have to put Ralph's head in a coal skuttle?

Well the police obviously moved the rifle.

Hi Buddy,

Have you ever read anything about crime scene analysis?

It's a strange thing to do for no reason but someone definitely did-what's your opinion on it Buddy?

Probably the same reason why he had to cover the distinctive bloodstain on the carpet in the master bedroom... With the Bible that had a bloodied palm print on... that probably formed part of the evidence when the case was four murderers and one suicide.

Nobody can deny the crime scene had been altered.

Not that I can recall Steph.

In the absence of physical forensic evidence, police forces often use psychological practices in helping them determine a criminals profile.

It assumes that criminals commit crimes in a consistent and distinctive manner.

Therefore the crime scene can often offer up clues as to the offenders behaviours and personality.

They didn't in this case, the family did.

I'm not sure why you think they didn't Buddy, as it appears the police did just that, as indeed did the trial.

They used both criminal profiling and crime scene analysis.

Criminal profiling wouldn't have given them the actual identity of the killer but it would have provided the police with some idea of the kind of person who committed the crime.

Can you honestly see Sheila leaving her fathers head in the coal skuttle.

And weren't his PJ bottoms part way down?
