Zenith Burglary

It was discovered on 5th November 2012 that SH & Jamie Barker had carried out a burglary on the night of the murder (16th Dec 2001).

Both SH and Jamie Barker were arrested and questioned under caution; some 6-7 months following the murder.

Both of their homes were searched and items seized and police even looked in the drains of all properties searched.

Jamie Barker was taken to Felixstowe police station and SH to Sudbury police station.

We learned in 2013 that SH and his legal teams over the years had not asked for disclosure of Jamie Barkers police interviews on the day he was also arrested and questioned under caution.

Did Jamie Barker tell the police he and SH had burgled Zenith in the early hours of 16th December 2001? He was after all facing a possible murder charge?

Did the police know about the burglary? And if they did know about the burglary; following SH's admission of this in 2012/13; were the police waiting for SH to confess?

Submissions were made to the CCRC in relation to the Zenith burglary, along with other submissions.
Not long before SH confessed the CCRC had told him they had been in contact with the police in relation to the burglary. What had the CCRC uncovered?

I'm always rather sceptical of these therapy videos and well-meaning as Merle Yost may be I have my doubts. Maybe he has helped many to cope with the after effects of sexual abuse but this topic is such a personal one and I sense something in his persona which gives me the creeps, sorry.

No need to be sorry Steve. I've read numerous articles on the effects of sexual abuse and decided to post the link to Merle Yost. Maybe I could have chosen another or posted several in order to compare them?

I think he sums it up well here:  https://static1.squarespace.com/static/51fc1dabe4b098462d559bb5/t/52317178e4b0830625df1474/1378972024583/Media.pdf

Maybe it was just the video I wasn't ready for.

The Simon Hall Inquest & it's Impact on Prisoners Maintaining Innocence
« Reply #129 on: September 25, 2016, 03:46:PM »
The inquest concluded Simon Hall did not have mental health issues nor did he have a personality disorder.

He had spent over 12 years in prison maintaining his innocence before he confessed to his crime and it was around 7 months after his confession that he was found hanging in his prison cell.

It has also been suggested Jeremy Bamber does not have a personality disorder or mental health issues.

Simon Hall was found guilty in February 2003 and died in February 2014. During his time in prison all experts that assessed him suggested he did not have a personality disorder.

Why then did Simon Hall commit a burglary on the 16th December 2001 and then go on to murder a 79 year old women in her own home a few hours later?

Why did he choose to publicly maintain innocence for all those years?

Simon Hall's case is a clear example of how prisoners can publicly maintain innocence and can be believed by many; including experts and independent public bodies such as the Criminal Cases Review Commission.

According to mental health experts who assessed Simon Hall just prior to and following his confession; there was nothing wrong with his mind...

However according to an independent expert who examined Simon Hall's prison records following his death, he suggested Hall could have had a Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).

Following Hall's confession the prison mental health team suggested he was not suffering from any mental health conditions. Although at the end of 2013 he was prescribed anti-depressants?

Following on from his confession in July 2013, Simon Hall was only ever assessed in relation to his risk to others.

In/around May of 2013 a psychiatrist stated in a written report that it was likely Simon Hall would succeed in ending his life.

2016 - Research from the Howard League suggests the financial cost of suicide in prison is up to £300m a year.

"Individuals with borderline personality disorder are diagnostically and clinically characterized by self-harm behavior, as indicated by the criterion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th Edition, Text Revision, “recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-mutilating behavior.” However, individuals with borderline personality disorder can display externalized aggressive behavior, as well. In an area characterized by considerably less research, empirical evidence indicates that individuals with borderline personality disorder may exhibit physical violence toward partners, physical violence toward known but nonintimate individuals, criminal behaviors that embody externalized violence (e.g., property damage), and, on very rare occasion, murderous behavior (either of family members or anonymous others through serial killing). Given this under-researched area, there are probably other types of externalized aggressive behaviors that have not been empirically revealed. However, externalized aggressive behaviors in individuals with borderline personality disorder clearly exist and need to be assessed in both psychiatric and primary care settings in an effort to promote safety of medical personnel and effective patient management.

"Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional instability, anxiety, and psychotic-like symptoms where those afflicted can suddenly become very paranoid or suspicious of others (Skodol et al., 2002). BPD has also been included by Simon Baron-Cohen as a disorder that results in zero degrees of empathy, a term he uses to describe conditions where the afflicted does not seem to have any empathy for others (Baron-Cohen, 2011). BPD is often comorbid with impulsive aggression, too (Skodol et al., 2002).

Simon Hall was being transferred to HMP Grendon for Dialectical Behaviour Therapy.

"Women, and men, with borderline personality disorder seem not to know how to stop arguing. Often described as "drama queens" or "abusive," they too frequently create chaos in situations where others would smoothly deal with the normal differences and disappointments that arise from time to time for all of us.

Marsha Linehan, creator of DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) which is the treatment method that is most often recommended for people with borderline issues, bases her understandings of this disorder on the belief that  people with bpd  "feel the mental squalls of rage, emptiness and anxiety far more intensely than most people do." This intensity of emotional pain was the theme of the first post in a series of articles I have begun posting on the inner experience of people with borderline disorders.
