Morning Lugg

I will concede defeat and admit I am a poor person living in a posh house ;D ;D ;D ;D
No no Susan. I didn't mean to offend you. It wasn't aimed at you at all. In fact the very fact you said that shows that it was an unfair tax and not necessarily for the reasons I gave. There are so many contradictory elements in it. That is why I said it was a stealth tax. In that the true purpose of it was to fill the government coffers and not to benefit the people.

Hi Lugg

honestly you did not offend me at all I know you would never be like that.  I have to agree that the poll tax was more of a benefit to the rich than the poor and I fit into neither category.  I have always thought some type of tax should be devised on the ability to pay not on the value of your home.  My home has dropped in value by £100.000 this last couple of years but I am still sitting in the high band.  But I am out of order complaining as I have so much more than some people and I feel very grateful that I can afford to pay the Council Tax and should count my blessings but as I said I do like a good moan now and again ;D ;D ;D ;D :-* :-* :-*

what a waste of money.

It's all a con nugnug. Those in power are always in it for themselves. I don't trust any MP whatever the make. As Tommy Trinder used to say, "MP stands for mostly promises".

She should have a Thatcherite funeral.  Put it out to tender and the most cost effective bidder should win the contract. Her funeral should be lean and efficient with minimum cost to the public purse.  Though I would accept a public / private partnership

What a great post, sadly with Thatcher she divided a country when in power and she has left a country divided about her death. There is no middle ground you either love her or hate her sadly i fall into the later? I only know her as a politician who destroyed the working class Her legacy, therefore, includes the desolate, overgrown industrial wastelands which blight our towns and cities to this day, and the lost skills and prosperity of hard-working working class families across the land.”“She privatised our utilities, our energy, our railways and buses, our steel, our coal and much more. She introduced compulsory competitive tendering in our Local Authorities and openly encouraged private companies to win the bids by smashing workers’ terms and conditions. This is why we are paying today for her legacy not to mention the milk, the council houses, the 15 per cent interest rates the high unemployment and last the benefit culture we have today which thatcher created to try and keep the dole figures low?  See your own mother and father queue for their food parcel and collect the 3 pounds a day picketing money for over a year, yes they had a choice either go back to work or fight for your job i am proud to say they did the latter.  Secret files revealed the true motive – to provoke the powerful NUM into a dispute and defeat them, and thus pave the way for the destruction of the rest of the trade union movement, whom she dubbed ‘the enemy within helped along the way with the tory press baron Rupert Murdoch? This is a leader of british people and these are her own words when people talk of her being the iron lady they have short memories of the legacy she has left behind.

An excellent post Ralph.

Hi ngb

I felt ralph's post yesterday was from the heart.  It was dignified honest and very sad and people like ralph's family are the ones I really felt for during Margaret Thatcher's reign many men left broken and never to recover families torn apart whole Communities wiped out and part of our Heritage wiped out as well. Her aim was to wipe out the Trade Unions and many men suffered because of this.  She will go down in History but IMO for the wrong reasons even her own party turned against towards the end. We have homeless families as all the Council houses were sold off this was done to gain votes Council houses were built for needy people and if you could afford to buy plenty of houses in the private sector.  I think ralph has said it all in his post.

Hi Roch

Think Margaret Thatchers own family can well afford to pay for their Mother's funeral it is the last thing they can do for her and perhaps they should insist on this and have a private funeral for her.  I feel if it was put to the public vote I know which way it would go.

What p's me off in all this is that those who loathed her will be attending her funeral.Why.?
The Blairs will be filling their boots,as usual,as will be the Kinnocks. Blair ( Bliar ) who took us unnecessarily into Iraq about some fairy-tale concerning WMD's,,of which there were none. Then when it was found he was lying,,he went after Saddam Hussein,,,who WASN'T a threat to this country,,but since his death, his legacy is now a long-lasting threat.
I didn't believe in the killing of Hussein. His treatment of his own people had nothing whatsoever to do with us,,,which proves it now with the Middle East in general as it remains on a knife-edge.

I'll eat my hat if Scargill attends the funeral, because he was another thorn in the side of the nation in trying to bring the country to its knees with the striking miners.Did he ever go to their rescue with food and money.? Of course he didn't.He scuttled off to his warm, luxurious house ( at the expense of the striking miners ) and tucked in to his gourmet meals. Quite a few of the miners by this time saw right through the shyster.
The strikes of 1979 were horrendous also,,with bodies piling up in mortuaries,,someones mum, dad, brother, sister, granny, grandad, etc,,waiting to be buried. Rubbish piled high in the streets, then some idiot asks what the panic's all about.

Those who either weren't born,or too young to understand, will only believe what they're told as it suits the teller how it's told,,,instead of reading the truth, and that's why we're having so much conflict over a blessed funeral and its costs,,which I'm sick of hearing about when there are BILLIONS of taxpayers money going overseas every year.

Has anyone ever given someone else a foot up the ladder like Thatcher did.?
Yes,,I had a damn good run for my money when Labour were in power, because of their careless mismanagement,,but by God,,it comes right home to you when you have to pull the reins in over someone elses mistake,,which is happening right now when dozy Brown sold off the gold at a silly price when it was at its lowest price.
How near bankruptcy we were when Brown left office,I don't know,,but if he'd got us out of the mess we were in and doled money out like sweets, then I'd have stuck with it.
With the money that's sent abroad,,my idea would be to firstly give every citizen of this country £1 million pound each===roughly £65 million,,a drop in the ocean when you consider the amount which goes overseas.  Surely,,a Labour-minded person wouldn't object to that idea. What each one did with their £1 million would be up to them. A kickstart to the economy,,and everyone equal. After all, bankers, politicians and the like, help themselves to such bonuses,so why not everyone else who put them there in the first place. After all,we've all paid, still paying taxes to keep these rich merchants.
