Its strange, i thought a private funeral service would be the best thing , i drive past Grantham on the A1 often i wonder how the mood is there, with her passing i hope some wounds heal in the mining communities , even today miners have gone to their deaths hating each other totally insane, thats what many blame her for . Children on the street looking at a hearse go by saying bye scab , expect zero sympathy for those crushed by her stance .

Morning Mertol

It is strange to hear Margaret Thatcher hated working class people I have also read she did not like the North of England and yet her very close associate i.e. Bernard Ingham was from a working class background in Yorkshire and his Father was a staunch Labour man and so was Bernard to begin with then he hopped over to the other side.  Maybe the thing they had in common they both had green grocers in their family ;D ;D ;D

Morning Lugg

I must admit the Poll Tax suited my household as we are only two and now we are paying 5 times what we did pay and we are certainly not rich.  The present system in Scotland is you are placed in a Band equating to the value of your house which I feel is unfair as two people use much less of the services of say 6 people who live in a lesser house.  The fact some people plough all their money into a property and miss having hols etc and meals out seems quite unfair in my book but hey ho I am grateful we can meet the demands from our local Council who will not come up my track road for the dustbin as they have not adopted it.  Moan over for today. Excellent way to start the day have a good moan ;D ;D ;D

Hi Susan. I wasn't saying that it only benefitted the rich. But the plain facts are it benefitted the rich more than it did the poor. The demonstrations at the time were witness that it was a very unpopular tax.
One reason I opposed it was that it was in fact illegal. Why? Because we already pay income tax and this was in fact a stealth tax to boost government income. What would of course be a better system, which is unpopular with councils because it would be very labour intensive, is a fairer council tax. It must in the end be the house that is taxed and not the people. If people can afford to live in a big house then they must be prepared to pay more council tax for that house. But it should be assessed more fairly. Another thing which is unfair is the business tax on business properties. You do not get the same services as you do for private accommodation and you also pay more for it. So this whole business of council tax should be thought through so that it is fair. But the poll tax was not the way to go simply because it just shifted the burden from one side of the population to the other. It was not fair.

ps: those shops who pay business tax do not get their rubbish collected by the council. They have to pay a private contractor to do it. Yet they pay more council tax. Also that business tax goes straight into the government coffers.
