Going on the title of the thread, it was JB that said he hired a hitman, Julie didn't make this up.

That's if we believe she's telling the truth. I'm always a little suspicious when I'm told about something that can't be confirmed, especially if it's about somone who can't defend themselves against it. In my experience it often comes down to agendas.

Not true steve, this is your take on the situation.  Sheila was a very sick young woman and a dreadful worry for her parents, with no support from the state.  Jeremy wouldn't be in the picture at all except they would be pleased he was getting on and working hard on the farm.  He was only 61 steve, you make out he was some old person of 80 who obviously would struggle with farm work but Neville was no doubt fitter than most.  Apart from Sheila's problems there was also something else worrying them as we know they had a panic button fitted.  The police don't do that on a whim and as there is a suggestion this was connected to Neville's work as a magistrate that may be the reason he was off sick from that position.....  It is convenient to blame all this on Jeremy but there were many other reasons for their troubles and NO proof that any of it was connected to Jeremy.

Thank you Mike, I think being a parent helps you to imagine a little of how it must have been for the Bambers and their worry about Sheila. ;D

Many homes in the 1980s had panic buttons fitted including my parents' home and they weren't half as wealthy as the Bambers. It seemed to be de rigeur especially with the unemployment which led to an unprecedented crime wave, especially as many Police Officers were on secondment to deal with the miner's strike.

I'm afraid Julie's statement makes all too mch sense,we know that Jeremy fooled the chief investigator DCI Taff Jones which must have given him a certain cachet, and I'm afraid Jeremy carried on behaving in the same disgraceful way he did before the murders, pleased with Basil Cock's assessment of his worth, chuffed with the booty which he stashed in the master bedroom after pretending in front of Ann Eaton that he was too frightened to venture upstairs.

The only good thing to come out of this Aga saga is that Jeremy was stopped in his tracks and was not able to profit from his crime on the backs of his elderly parents who should have been looking for quality time at their age and taking it a little easier, and of course Sheila and the boys who deserved their share, unlike Jeremy who was greedy and impatient for it all,and heaven knows how he would have acted with Anji Greaves in the London nightclubs snorting cocaine and still heavily dependent on cannabis one wonders if he would have killed himself within year's end.
Hi Steve
A panic button, fitted by the police is not the same as a burglar alarm.  Police only fit panic buttons when there is a real threat to life.  Therefore, there was a threat from outside the family of a serious nature.  We know James Bell had threatened the Bambers waving a .22 rifle with a silencer attached and throwing bullets at their Range Rover.  There was also a threat from someone else, a father because of Ralph's sentencing of their son.
You have admitted yourself Steve, that you don't know anything about drugs but continue to chuck accusations about Jeremy Bamber's drug habits around on any available occasion.
Thing that gets me is that there is a very real tragedy here and all this fantasy rather clouds the issues. imo

;) So telling Julie Tonight's The Night, I'm a good actor and my dad put up a struggle with the hitman is all evidence about his feelings for his family :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

If you read back though my posts I was talking about the evidence she gave as to what he said he might do or had done, but yes, that is further evidence of a conversation which she says took place and in which in part he lied, not her. So if, as has been suggested, there is any inconsistency in determining the difference between truth and lies in Julie's statements it is only problematic when it comes to determining which of the things JB said to her were true and which were lies of his. I don't see that as having much bearing on the case at all on its own, however as evidence of JBs general attitude towards his family it was pretty damning. There is nothing in Julie's statements which could be said to be a lie told by her (as opposed to a lie told to her by JB) and so her credibility in that respect is intact.

How do you know that SHE didn't make the whole thing up?

I don't, but that was the jury's job to decide and clearly they decided that she didn't.

..because it's backed up indirectly by so many other witnesses, independent or otherwise.

As kids the only panic button we had was pulling the cats tail. That was enough to send my mum into a panic.

Actually Andrea it was Julie mugford who said he said it. It is just up to the individual whether they believe her or not?

He was quite evidently trying to spare her feelings after he realized the strength of feeling she had about being party to five murders and yet was supposed to sit and play her part without the slightest remonstrance. Anji Greaves described this as "giving Jeremy mouth" when all he needed was support. Thank heavens those two did not hit the town as free individuals on the backs of five corpses Jeremy created.
