Metropolitan Police detectives are trying to bring Christian Brueckner to Britain to stand trial for the abduction and murder of Madeleine McCann, The Telegraph can reveal.

One of Scotland Yard’s most senior officers is leading a push to charge the German suspect before the 20th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance next year.

The force would like to see Brueckner, 48, stand trial at the Old Bailey and believes it can gather a strong enough case for the Crown Prosecution Service to authorise charges.

However, the German constitution prevents the extradition of its citizens to non-EU countries, which could see Berlin reject the request. This would be likely to provoke a diplomatic and legal row.

If Germany still refuses to hand over the rapist and paedophile, the Met is committed to ensuring that he still faces charges in Germany or in Portugal, where the alleged crime took place.

Do you think Breuckner is guilty, Steve?

You are so naive Steve.  There are 365 days in a year and of all the days for such a press release it just so happens to coincide with the anniversary of the disappearance when there's always some publicity  ::)

If the Met wanted to charge CB I am sure there would be a formal announcement on the likes of the BBC.  If there was any evidence the German police would have charged him but they haven't charged him because there's no evidence because he is not responsible.
Patrick O'Connor, Barrister, Doughty Street Chambers: "It will have to be a slam dunk.  It will have to be something of a blockbuster piece of evidence to have a chance".

On balance I'm inclined to doubt his guilt. But I don't know.

Suspected child murderers can't be extradited from Germany to the UK? Sounds like nonsense to me.

I don't know snow66! I'm inclined to think she died in the apartment, but at whose hands is still a mystery.

Thanks, Steve! So you believe either Kate or Gerry was responsible?

I don't know. I can't accuse without evidence. If they were responsible they have gone to huge lengths to cover up: the media interviews, travelling to the Vatican to meet the Pope, etc.
