The other thing about what curiousessex said was that Jeremy had said he hadn't got a clue about her illness, yet he called her a nutter.. I think this is misinterpreted, in the way that he knew she was ill, but did not thoroughly research her illness to point where he fully understood it. I don't know about you maggie, but I still think mental illness is not fully understood by many...

Patti, in 1985 terms such as "nutter", "loony", "mental", "half wit", "screw loose", "lunatic" were bandied about in everyday speak, along with all those ghastly racial words that are no longer acceptable. People described thus were incarcerated in "mad houses", "nut houses", "loony bins"and "lunatic asylums" These degrading descriptions were thrown around casually without any real knowledge of what they meant or how cruel and insulting they were. IMO, most of it was out of fear and ignorance. The funnier they made to sound, the less it would touch them.
