Would DVLA still hold his licence details from 1985? He wouldn't have to resit his driving test would he? Would be perfectly valid I suspect still.

That's Companies House and nothing to do with HMRC. 

Perhaps Dundee FC were not on the ball, no pun intended, with regard to due diligence.  Once due diligence was carried out and/or feedback received they probably realised the guy was a total fake and had fa to offer.
