I don't think he was even worried when she went to the police ( from a gulit stance )

Doesn't seem flustered from the interview transcripts, many consider him evasive, but he remains fairly cool and confident throughout. Heavily riding on the " I left her so she made up bullshit agenda "

He attempted to send Julie a letter with sarcastic overtones " hi stinker"

Even when arrested at Dover weeks later and charged, he was all smiles

Even through the trial he was apparently very confident, Edmund Lawson QC recalling him discussing his prospective newspaper deal as the jury were deliberating, It's obvious he thought he was getting a not guilty.

I think reality only  hit home the first time when he would have been in the holding cell after being found gulity and given life with a 25 year recommendation.A source saying he broke down screaming " no no no "

But even then by all accounts he regained composure quickly, and told Rivlin about his intention to appeal.

According to my source, the person who escorted him to the cells, he broke down. His words, allegedly, "I will never get out of here now".

You knew an escort officer at Chelmsford ?

Crazy how sentencing has changed over the years

JB got life with a minimum of 25 years for five victims. Peter Sutcliffe got a min of 30 years some years before for the murder of 13 women! ( Both later changed to whole life)

These days people can get a whole life tariff for a single victim.Of longer minimum tariffs than both JB and Sutcliffe got for a single victim

Like so many of those associated with the case, she's now, well into her 90s. At the time she was some sort of Court official. I believe, in training as a probation officer

Wil have to dismiss Rob's theory that Bamber walked for the following reasons -

Walking the Sea Wall route took Wilkinson 70 minutes.

Walking the 2 routes via Brook House Farm took 45 and 58 minutes.

Walking via Brook House farm passes either 45 or over 100 properties. Potential security cameras and people.

Wilkinson said there is not a direct walking route across fields.

Wilkinson attempted a more direct walking route but without success -

'The paths go directly across ploughed fields or cultivated crops. Or peter out on the banks of small streams or irrigation canals'.

If Bamber wanted to use one of the 2 Brook House Farm routes, he would cycle.

The terrain was roads so perfect for cycling.

A lot quicker, easier & less tiring than walking.

Also spends less time outside so less chance of being seen.

The down side is he is passing multiple properties, people & potential security cameras.

If he wanted to take The Sea Wall route, he would cycle. The terrain was fine for that.

Much quicker, easier and less tiring than walking

In summary walking was either -

Too long.

Too tiring.

Too risky.

Direct route terrain not negotiable.

Much quicker, easier and less tiring to cycle any of the 3 available routes.

A combination of the above.

It's not like the bike was top of the range mountain bike. I doubt they even existed in 1985. It was either BMX, racers, or  the bike in question.  None of which would be suitable (bar possibly, a good BMX). The bike in question was pretty poor if I remember correctly.

The routes walking/cycling -

The Sea Wall:

70 minutes walking.
35 minutes cycling.

Brook House Farm. Route 1.

58 minutes walking.
22 minutes cycling.

Brook House Farm. Route 2.

45 minutes walking.
16 minutes cycling.

Across fields:

Not possible to walk or cycle.

Personally believe cycling at a good pace would knock at least 70% off the walking times.

Meaning the cycle times would be -

21 minutes - The Sea Wall.

18 minutes - BHF route one.

14 minutes - BHF route two.

----------

Wilkinson would have been monitoring and taking notes.

All of these cycle rides would result in minimal energy being used. Unlike walking. Bamber needed lots of energy to get through the next 15 hours.

I have dismissed Rob's walking option. Using times given by Wilkinson.

Please only contribute if you have something constructive to say.

We have gone over the sea wall in great detail

You have gone from " he didn't use any lighting" to bike lights, torches, Christmas trees and couples in Surrey.

Wilkinson said his walks were 'brisk'.

Doubtful Bamber walking to WHF & back in quick succession would be brisk.

Therefore doubtful he would be as quick as Wilkinson.
