What annoys me about the current EU/UK arrangements is there's no gratitude for past events (I'm thinking primarily of WW2), no special deal for us as members of the club for over forty years. We're tarred with the same brush as any third country outside the block, whilst figurehead Ursula von der Leyen sits there, elected dubiously to her post and impossible to remove. https://www.mylondon.news/lifestyle/travel/brit-tourists-pay-17-charge-33269539?int_source=nba

Has anyone considered Cumbria? Parts full of tourist traps and day trippers, though some areas far from the madding crowd. https://www.nwemail.co.uk/news/24212719.cheapest-expensive-areas-live-south-cumbria/

I thought the government was going to sort the leasehold issue: apparently not. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy84g9822gro

I thought you were a Brexiteer?  If so you can't have your cake and eat it.

Considered Cumbria for what?  Your retirement?  I thought you wanted somewhere drier and warmer than the North?  Its a good venue for walking and a break but I personally would not want to live there.  I did once see a job where you had to walk to the top of Scafell every day to assess the weather which I thought would be fun.

Well, you do have a point about the weather in Cumbria. But there are parts of the county which are still unspoiled, and I could buy a house rather than a flat I would have to make do with if I lived in the south of England. I don't like the leasehold system, which exists only in England and Wales.

They've made an effort with the city centre. I do like a place with history: Victoria Station, the Corn Exchange, Manchester Cathedral, the Bridgewater Hall. I suppose part of my genes are imbued with the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, though I have no illusions about the conditions which pertained in Victorian times.

This is the best place I found in Cumbria. I suppose if one is indoors a space would have to be converted to a fitness room. Taxi to Carlisle is an 11-mile journey: cost £30. https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/170627465#/?channel=RES_BUY

Anyone fancy a complete change of scene? Not much going on culturally, but a very reasonable cost of living replete with hot weather. https://www.properstar.co.uk/listing/113029424

Looks to be a bit too close to a main road for enjoying the garden. Make a cheeky offer.

From research Junction 41 of the M6 is a 15-20 minute drive, so I wouldn't anticipate any noise from that quarter. A drawback: the B5305 is used by HGV's travelling between Wigton and Penrith.

It might be apposite to invest in double glazing at the front.

P.S. I would have thought Kiwis would appreciate Cumbria, it being probably the most similar geographically to New Zealand, along with the Scottish Highlands.

I've a few mates in Cumbria, last saw them in 2011 when they came here for the Rugby World Cup.

Looks as though you've done your homework on traffic noise etc.
Most of what you say about NZ would apply to the Sth Island.
But having said that when my parents came to visit my father likened an exclusive Nth Island beach to a coastal place in Scotland.

A place we looked at buying last year, was affected by the recent record rainfalls. There was a massive slip at the side of the property which is now precariously close to the cliff face.
Good luck with your search.

It was Joe Karam who stirred up the hornet's nest. Time to put the record straight methinks.

What record? I think DB is innocent. It's not conclusive for it to be David or Robin.
The Police decided to burn the house down along with some of the evidence.
