The trouble with EU Countries Steve is the 3 month rule and the residency issue?

Yes, though the D7 visa in Portugal gives you EU access, as does buying property in Malta. France, as you mentioned is also an option.

Another thing to consider Steve is the fluctuation in the currency, i remember a lot of Brits going to Spain to live and when the Pound fell against the Euro it caused a lot of hardship for some?

Canada is a little too cold for me in winter, which seems to stretch endlessly from what I've been told. Costa Rica requires a monthly income of $1000, so on the low side for the retirement visa option.

Yes I agree. The only snag is the language. I had some lessons from a guy from Madeira a while back. Though a Romance language it's harder than Spanish as there's a French influence to confuse, with some nasal endings.

MMM yes, they was moving in to the Spanish regions, but that will have stopped now.

My son has just spent the last 4 weeks in France and is still touring, absolutley loves it?

If i could have my wish, i would just set off into the sunset on my bike and tour the world.  There is a website called warm showers that put cyclists up for the night in different countries.  I think ive read about four books on this subject now.
