I don't think the Bambers did anything to instil that.

Jeremy was encouraged to work on the farm. Maybe he liked it more than people think he did, but if he didn't, he should have felt free to do something else with his parent's support. Sheila didn't seem to have to work much at all.

Maybe in the sense that Jeremy was the natural heir to the farming business. After Sheila became ill he might have thought his status had been elevated.

Did either of them pay rent on the homes they lived in?

Sheila couldn't manage to hold down any meaningful employment in London. June had her enrolled at St. Godric's Secretarial College but her daughter couldn't keep pace with the shorthand and she left. She tried her hand at hairdressing but was dismissed for poor timekeeping. June paid for Sheila's portfolio which was sent to the Lucie Clayton agency and she did get one assignment in Japan, where she was expected to entertain clients of an evening similar to the geisha girls. She felt her mental health deteriorating and wrote as much to Colin. She ended up with a menial cleaning job in a house on Hampstead Heath.

Jeremy by contrast was told how lucky he was to have been granted a house to live in at Head Street, Goldhanger, vacated when they gave Len Foakes notice to quit. He lived there rent-free but had to furnish it himself. This grievance about having to buy curtains and carpets led to the Osea Road robbery. June frowned upon Julie's presence there, calling her a "harlot" to her face. His parents bought him a car, a share in a field to arouse an interest in farming and put 8% of the caravan park in his name.

So they were encouraged to be dependent on their parents. That would also encourage a sense of entitlement would it not?

Don't forget they were both away at boarding school for 30 weeks in the year. By their late teens they had both drifted apart from their parents. June's illness in 1982 gave them more freedom in a way with the burden falling on Nevill's shoulders.

Maybe, but jobs were found for them, houses were found for them. They didn't have to do much for themselves did they? That can be an advantage in life, but it can also be a disadvantage in that perhaps they didn't feel they could cope on their own without financial support or without someone finding jobs and houses for them.

Nobody found a job for Sheila, unless you call the offer of running an antiques shop in Maldon purveyed by June. Of course Sheila was far too ill to do any meaningful work, though anecdotally she kept the Maida Vale flat spotless and always had time to take Nicholas and Daniel to the swings on Paddington Recreation Ground. Jeremy didn't understand his sister's illness, though ended up taking advantage of it in the most diabolical way.

This was a case of nepotism V's entitlement. Jeremy was given certain comforts in exchange for his place on the farm, Sheila was given the same because she was unable to thrive on her own. Nothing wrong with nepotism in certain respects. Depends on the family dynamics.

Interesting article.

Gosh this is heavy reading for bedtime Caroline. Do you think the Trump dynasty has benefited from the involvement of Eric and Ivanka?

You just said this:

Quote

Not jobs as such, but June found her things to do and enroll in, or paid for her. Now you say that June found her an antique shop. I would say all that counts as running someone's life. She was given the flat I presume?

Yes she was given the flat in Maida Vale because the flat in Hampstead she and Colin were renting had rising damp and June had her two grandchildren to consider. As far as parental influence goes you can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

Being given comforts in exchange for his place on the farm isn't the same as creating your own comforts and doing the job you want to do. If Jeremy was offered a job on the farm at the going rate and told he had to pay rent for the house, like anyone else, it would be different, but it sounds like his "comforts" were dependent on doing what someone else wanted. I can see the temptation of course - no job interviews, no having to find your own place and pay for it, but at what expense to yourself?

I wonder what Colin thought of that.

People who don't have rich parents would have to find themselves somewhere else and pay for it.
