I can't think of anything more natural, when being asked for/giving someone's age, than hedging one's bets slightly, unless of course, it's a mother talking about the age of her new baby. She'll probably have it right to the minute. So, given that he accepted that 26/27 was correct, it was of no consequence what wrote and what he passed on, ONE of the ages would be right.
