Wouldn't you think that French intelligence services (and their associated networks) would be aware of any kind of Islamist terrorist cell capable of committing this kind of attack?  So we now have Islamic special forces types operating, capable of committing audacious attacks on obvious targets.  I wonder what the impact on public opinion will be, after this incident (given the debates raging in France already).

Hi Roach :)

Are the intelligent services ever aware?

I think this attack sends a clear message in that the terrorist groups are well geared up and can operates in stealth or what ever it is called.  The other message is of course is that they operate SAS style and its clear that if you mess or ridicule them, they will shoot you.

Is this a new wave of terror???????

Oh, we will see more in the years to come! Much more. My prediction is that our world will change dramatically. Glad I can easily escape to Iceland any day! It is so far away from everything and so sparsely populated that nobody will bother with us!

Hi Patti,

I remain a bit more sceptical.  It is possible that the attack was carried out by Islamist extremists and it is possible that it was not carried out by Islamist extremists.  I would be astounded if the magazine offices were not being monitored.  The incendiary approach taken by the magzine would make it an obvious target.  With regards to intelligence services monitoring potential terror suspects, I'm not sure but I suspect they have a pretty good handle on who's who within the different foreign communities.

I'm sure we will Alias. The more I look at this wickedness the more frightening it is. The whole is at risk from these barbaric attacks.....I really feel for the families.

Hope it never comes to you going back home Alias. Its a worrying time for all of us, not just for politicians.  :'(

Oddly enough I have just heard that on the news.  I agree the magazine office must have been watched to the extent that they may have known who to target once inside.

Maybe they do know something but cannot say at this moment in time because it might hinder security.. No doubt we will get to know something soon.... ;D

The attackers obviously knew that the magazine had a editorial meeting every Wednesday morning + they knew where the meetings took plsace, because that is where they headed immediately. They did their homework.
