Because of my interest in this case and some people's belief that lies are never told under oath, I've asked all my friends, one of whom has just retired from the bench, what they thought of those who lie under oath. Naturally, they were appalled at the thought and it was very much a question of British justice rules. Then I asked if they would tell the same, undiluted truth if it was their child who was likely to loose everything if the story they were telling couldn't be verified. Whilst I'm FULLY aware that everyone WANTED to say that they would tell the truth, the truth was that they couldn't lie when asked such a totally unexpected question, and the best answer I received, after long silences from them all, was that they HOPED they'd be able to tell the truth, but many said they'd do anything to protect their child. I have to say I rather imagine that I would, too.

Casey Anthony´s mother, Cindy, lied on the stand for her daughter - and I believe that got her off the hook.
I think that most parents would, no doubt!

i probly would i think most people would depending on the circumstances.

So may we assume that Mary Mugford may have twisted certain facts to make them slant in her daughter's favour?
-
April I suspect Julie's Mother would have spoken in Julie's favour as she would know the position her daughter was in.
-
well you certanly cant rule it out.

I would say so,April. How many mothers have you heard saying " my son/daughter wouldn't do that ",,when there's real proof that they did,,particularly sons when they're arrested.I don't know whether it's out of protection or denial, but either way,,mothers will always stand by their siblings, and are definitely prepared to twist the truth.
-
well theirs lying and there selective memory which i think most people have.

Oh yes, nug,,and there's a big difference there too. There's lies and damn lies,,and there's think before you speak,,,lies.

Of course! Julie was in trouble, Julie was her daughter. People lie, or let´s be diplomatic and say twist facts under oath all the time.
-
well people say they would never do it but there ussauly people who have been put a situan where they needed to.

Perhaps you should say that a bit louder, Alias. There are those here who simply won't have it.

Mary Mugford knew Jeremy well. Jeremy had been going out with her daughter Julie for a long time.
Mary said nice things about Jeremy under oath. Saying Jeremy called her mummy. Jeremy also offerred Mary Junes car directly after the massacre.
Mary could have been cross examined by the defence. Jeremy could have also denied her testimony during his 8 hour stand in the witness box.
There is no record of either of these things happening.

Why was her initial statement not disclosed??

Intial statements are just that, intial.
Several more drafts will be made until the witness is happy for it to be submitted. It is very important that the witness is totally happy with the WS. The person will be asked questions on it in the witness stand.
The final draft will be made available to both prosecution & defence.
Both parties can ask the witness questions on the submitted WS. Not the original one.

If you are telling the truth then there should be no need for changes.

Leaving aside the whole Bamber case.....no I would not lie for my child. I would want to support him but I would not lie for him no.
-
I am a Vulcan I cannot lie.

I agree - I have always tried to teach my children to tell the truth - so I would do the same.

Me too,Jansus,,and I suspect that Jeremy was brought up the same. The reason why he hasn't " plumped " for a guilty plea,,just to satisfy those concerned who convicted him,in order for them to turn round and say " I told you so ".It's like a game of cat and mouse waiting to see who will succumb first.
Jeremys' determination to stand by the truth, such as he has done,,is admirable.
I'm of the type that would also fight to the finish, regardless,as long as I got the truth.
