Fife coast
« on: October 28, 2017, 09:06:PM »
Anyone familiar with this area?  There is a coastal walk and fishing villages, as well as St. Andrews.  Just trying to scope the place as a potential weekend break in December.  Hope I don't need to take a sowester.

North Yorks to Cumbria.  I can imagine it would be nice.  We went to Cumbria last year - place called Temple Sowerby near Penrith.

Not going to Fife now.  Too much of a clart on to drive around Edinburgh.  Plumbed for North Berwick instead.  Anyone been?  Not to be confused with Berwick upon Tweed.

Hi Roch, I don’t think you can go wrong anywhere up that coast, been as far as Eyemouth, then did the Coast back to Berwick on tweed, down to Seahouses, some of the best beaches and there won’t be many on this time of the year, A1 was quite and good views from the road once you get past Berwick on Tweed, had a friend who worked on Burntisland he loved it up there.  For a change why don’t you come down and do the Peak District, 20 mile Edale sky line walk, taking in Mam tor, mam nick and Kinder, this one tests your navigational skills, better to do it  in Spring though, then you can go to the Chatsworth Christmas Market next day.  Nice place to stop for the weekend Darwin Forest at Matlock.

A good App for the phone is Viewranger, amazing App and it’s within a metere of where your walking and works off satellite, it’s got me out of a few situations up Kinder, you can download for free, but you pay for ordinance survey maps, this way you never lose them and they don’t get ripped or destroyed, also you can download loads of walks onto your phone.

It's funny you should mention that. I've been wondering about Peak District.  This year we had a canal holiday in Cheshire (well recommended btw). I noticed that the Peak District is not too far away from Manchester.  I used to go to uni with a lad from Glossup and he used to mention he was from Derbs. but also near Manchester. I couldnt work it out until I checked a map.  I think we will visit Peak at some point but have tended to concentrate on Co. Durham, Cumbria, Northumberland, North Yorks & Borders.

I was in Berwick four years ago. We walked five miles along a beach to get there. I've seen that Burntisland on the map.  Never been past Berwick on that coast - so not been to Eyemouth or Dunbar but both look canny. North Berwick is further still and I think its proximity to Edinburgh means property is expensive there.

Never knew about that. We normally just print basic directions off internet. It always ends up a bit trial and error on the walks.

The Peak District is one of the most visited National parks Roch, Winnats Pass and the blue John mines are a must.  You have the Dark peak which is much wilder but great views, then the light peak over towards Chatsworth and Matlock.  Frogget edge and Curber edge is where they do rock climbing but the walk along the edge is amazing, then you have surprise view and over to Stanedge with views over Hathersage and towards Kinder.  Then Edale, this is where the Pennine way starts, taking you up Jacobs Ladder over Kinder, you can even locate  millatry aeroplane wrecks up Kinder.  Glossop is nice but bad in winter over the snake pass.  If you ever go Roch keep these walks in mind you won’t be disappointed, but the best is dovedale, have a look.

The App is amazing Roch, you can download tiles for just the area you are walking in, or you can download whole national parks, I’ve got Lake District, Peak District new Forest, etc and you can download walks for the area as well it’s in Ordanance survey, either 1/25000 or 1/50000

Cheers Justice. That's given me a good intro to the area.  The walk along the edge sounds good. I think I've got a bag of Blue John somewhere. My dad was in to fossil collecting and polishing semi precious stones.
