I thought perhaps the dog in the shed would be barking because it could hear and sense the presence of the police outside - he would be more of a guard dog. With the little one inside, that would be the one that could be heard barking over the open phone line. Can't remember the time of the line being opened by the operator, but little dogs can be just as protective over their owners as bigger ones, regardless of who is harming them. Obviously, that still doesn't tell us who was the shooter. Did the 'little one' usually sleep in the main bedroom? I assume he was found cowering, wherever, as he was terrified of the police descending into the bedroom. But, yes, if only dogs could talk....
