Sympathy for Taff Jones ?
« on: September 01, 2016, 01:40:PM »
It was bad policing from Taff Jones. Although I have some sympathy.

Other officers were suspicious of Bamber straight away. Taff should have been as well. Maybe he was.

But things moved quickly after the bodies were discovered and the media had been told it was murder/suicide. As the head of the investigation he quickly reached the point of no return, as it was his head on the block if the police started publically suggesting other options,  with nothing to back it up early on.

Bamber had not been arrested so internally and externally Taff had to stick rigedly to the murder/suicide claim.

He couldn't publically change stance as Julie had not gone forward and the forensic evidence had not been processed. He would have looked stupid and heartless in public changing stance and blaming a man who had lost his family,  with nothing to back it up. Especially if Bamber was innocent. Bamber would have no doubt made a complaint and seeked compensation from EP.

It's alright Stan Jones and co raising doubts behind the scenes. They were not in charge of the investigation.

Taff dismissed the relatives concerns, perhaps at the time correctly and through gritted teeth. However he should have had the courage to change stance prior to the relatives approaching Peter Simpson and being replaced as head officer. By that time there was enough to change stance. Peter Simpson had no hesitation agreeing the case should be examined again.

Taff should have also not been so supportive of Bamber after Julie came forward. Interviewing an in denial Bamber for 10 minutes, before announcing 'Julie must be lying'. However he was fully committed to the Bamber being guilty by the time he was arrested upon his return from St Tropez.

Sadly for Taff he never got to see how things unfolded.

NOBODY had been suspicious of Jeremy right away. It was when SJ came along, and because he too couldn't find anything to pin onto JB he'd decided that he MUST get a conviction after EP's abysmal record, that he started putting words into everyone's mouth------which pleased the relatives no end because they then joined in the fray. THAT'S what happened !!

Then for DB to say what he did " nobody wins " ,well all I can say is that he and co. didn't do so badly at all. They made sure that THEY would " win ".

I still cannot understand why AP got so much from the inheritance.

It seems that Taff was comfortable with the murder/suicide, so much so he decided to go and play golf.
He appears to regard Jeremy as a victim, not a suspect.
I think he took DI Jones to task when he thought Jeremy was responsible
I assume that Taff viewed the crime scene, but sadly we will never know his thoughts.

I think you will find out Buddy it was two and a half days later when he went to play golf, he would also have the force's blessing to go as well.

OK Justice, but I wasn't sure.
I think Mr Stone gives a fair judgement of how the investigation panned out?

I don't believe Taff was making public statements about murder/suicide, while at the same time saying privately Bamber could be guilty.

It seems he dismissed the relatives and other officers without any sympathy. Miller said Taff still said it was murder/suicide after the silencer and Julie were presented. And that was after other senior officers had changed stance.

Only when Bamber was in St Tropez was he coming around.

If he ever believed Bamber was guilty early on, he certainly refused to say so. Perhaps to try to save his own skin.

Just another person in high office not up to the job. Why are we all surprised?

I wonder if Taff Jones would have made a difference on the trial verdict if he testified  :-\

To say what..that he compromised the crime scene forensically? Was there any truth in the dossier of evidence against Sheila which was stolen from a Police Officer's loft? Maybe he fell from the ladder on purpose. We will never know for sure.

After what happened to Taff, it's a good job Bamber didn't get a ladder and try to gain access to WHF via Neville and June's upstairs bedroom window. As other people have suggested he could have.

Taff Jones was taken off the case so his statement wouldn't probably been used.

Taff Jones was also near retirement when the Bamber case came up, so I think he was looking for an open and shut case before the end of his career.

I'm not sure but I think it had something to do with the land which Neville had purchased that nobody only the recipient ( Eatons ) knew about-------not even Jeremy ! So they didn't let on to AP either, probably hoping it would go away. I wonder how he felt too at almost being fleeced !

Answering my own thread question,  it is hard to feel one way or the other for Taff as no one knows what was said behind the scenes. And Taff can't give his version.

Everyone had no choice in the first few days to go along with murder/suicide. The media reporting it as such.

No one can break ranks publically until Bamber is officially arrested. Apparently in private Taff was quite dismissive of the relatives and other police officers who had their suspisions. This may be true. But again Taff can't answer back.  If true it may be because at the time there was no evidence which raised any doubts.

He should have changed stance after the silencer and Julie came forward. Miller said other senior officers did. But being head of the investigation from day one and classing it as murder/suicide he didn't want to.
