Hillsborough Inquests - David Duckenfield
« on: March 12, 2015, 12:16:PM »
It may be nearly 26 years too late, but finally David Duckenfield, the police chief in charge on the day of the Hillsborough disaster has agreed he was "incompetent" and said his "mistakes" and "oversight" caused the deaths of 96 fans.

Duckenfield:I'm not making excuses.I've got nothing to cover up. I've put my hands up & have admitted my failings & I will continue to do so.

Yeah, after 26 years of false narrative, that has harmed thousands of people and slurred the dead.

It must be a HUGE relief to FINALLY hear those words and get official confirmation of what SO many already knew.

He will have had it on his conscience for the last 26 years but he's also had the comparative luxury of keeping it private. It now remains to be seen whether his public admission proves cathartic or an intolerable burden.

David Duckenfield admitted to the Hillsborough inquests that he breached his duty of care to ensure the safety of Liverpool fans.

"The inquest jury has heard that the numbers in the terrace DID NOT exceed the number of tickets sold, and suggested that ticketless fans made NO contribution to the disaster"

- further vindication for Liverpool fans.

David Duckenfield - "I publicly apologise, sir, for the inference that Liverpool fans caused those deaths."

Finally, albeit nearly 26 years too late.

David Duckenfield today agreed he had accepted responsibility for his failings during the Hillsborough disaster, having seen that the “writing is on the wall”.

Duckenfield acknowledged that the publishing of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report in 2012, had forced him to confront the issues about which he had been in denial since 1989.

(I agree, mainly the fact that he has lied for nearly 26 years and not taken the opportunity to correct his lies or admit to his failings)

MASSIVE MASSIVE ADMISSION - just a shame its almost 26 years too late.

David Duckenfield has agreed that his failure to close a tunnel "was the direct cause of the deaths of 96 people".

He also accepted that he "froze" during the afternoon of the Hillsborough disaster.

Recent events do seem to have been momentous.

It's a bit mealy mouthed as well as late, petey. If this is the exact quote then he is choosing his words very carefully. He doesn't admit implying it himself, but instead apologises for others inferring that the deaths were caused by fans.
Having read some of the evidence given by Duckenfield he still comes across as evasive and dishonest.

Big time. Everything he says is carefully scripted to get him off criminal charges. Whilst it is a big step forward for him to accept his actions were responsible for 96 deaths, to admit negligence and is another big step.

No disrespect but what is that meant to mean?  Momentous for whom?

It is a big step forward but nothing is momentous until the verdicts are announced.

He could and in my view should be prosecuted for manslaughter (on the basis of gross negligence) and perverting the course of justice.

Absolutely, ngb, that's exactly what I thought too. He's playing the victim very well,I thought.
