Prisons are full of stupid people who in hindsight, might have done things a whole lot differently. I think he did it and that's where I stand. I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone

It did initially - if they hadn't believed it, they wouldn't have bothered with the siege. It worked for him in the early stages, then it helped convict him.

I would agree that it wasn't the brightest thing to do and given time and other circumstances he may have done something other, but the worst that can happen always seems FAR worse when everything preceding has gone really well.

Plus, if he could convince the police he was elsewhere when it happened, he's have a better chance of getting away with it.

I agree, he had no choice but to go ahead and hope that the phone call would convince the police that he was home at the time of the murders.
