One gets the impression that, like other professions/vocations, be it politics or priesthood, UNLESS one is willing/capable of "bending the rules", altruism will keep one on  the bottom rung of the ladder and overlooked each time it comes to promotion. Psychopaths should do VERY well :D

I think nugnug has nailed this one.  I think in any organisation, especially one that has authority and power, once there is a culture of getting away with telling porkies, it pretty much become institutionalised.  It becomes everyday practice.  Organisations also cut corners and in doing so probably need to manipulate the truth, which in turn produces models for manipulating the truth for more sinister reasons.

I think there are loads of good cops that are honest and motivated for the right reasons.  Jeremy Bamber wrote an interesting article on his blog some time back about 'who polices the police'.  I suppose it's a bit like asking 'who audited the banks'

Not necessarily? Take the case where they stopped the two black guys and said to them on tape, "We can make stuff up" Why would they do that, deliberately threaten to make false statements in order to send two innocent people to prison for no apparent reason? As one of the guys said, "We would have been found guilty of a crime we did not commit".
And there are members of this forum who cannot see a reason for cops in Jeremy's case to lie. But here is a perfect example of cops lying for no reason.
