I see the inhumanity of it all. People who do not believe in the death penalty and yet they subject their fellow man to years of incarceration. If I believed him to be guilty I must admit my sympathies would not be so great. But prison destroys the human spirit and consequently the person himself. There must be a more humane way of tackling these things and treating these people with the respect that all human beings should have?

Yes,he sounds very down, with not as much hope as he's normally got. Unless of course it's the time of the year when he reflects more on times past, which is what most of us do from time to time.
It's the waiting and not knowing that'll get him down the most now.
