Silencer (SBJ/1)  found on 7th August 1985

Information contained in the original Property Register linked to the investigation (which at that time was four murders and a suicide, under crime reference, SC/688/85), DS "Stan" Jones took control of four exhibits from the scene on 7th August 1985 - SBJ/2, SBJ/3 and SBJ/4...

By inference, exhibit SBJ/1 must also have bveen found or seized from the scene on 7th August 1985...

Exhibit SBJ/1 was the original exhibit reference given to the silencer...

DS "Stan" Jones was pestering former DCI "Taff" Jones to take a closer look at Jeremy as a possible suspect, and claiming the silencer was used at some stage in the shootings. This caused DCI Jones to take DS Jones along with him to speak to Jeremy at his cottage, 9 Head Street, Goldhanger, Essex, on the afternoon of 9th August 1985 (before the keys to whf were handed back to the relatives). At this time, DCI Jones asked Jeremy, if the silencer was fitted to the barrel of the Bamber rifle the last time Jeremy had seen the gun at the scene on the previous evening to the shootings? Jeremy replied, "No", and with this DCI Jones satisfied DS Jones suspicion...

DCI Jones knew that the silencer (SBJ/1) which DS Jones was referring to, was not attached to the barrel of the Bamber rifle, and it had not been attached to the barrel of the Bamber rifle at all when Sheila was fatally shot in the bedroom...

He was aware, however, that this silencer (SBJ/1) could have been fitted to the barrel of another gun at the scene, at the time Sheila was shot and non fatally wounded downstairs in the region of the kitchen...

DCI Jones knew there existed an officers report about the shooting incident downstairs which involved the use of the silencer (SBJ/1) when Sheila was shot and wrongly presumed to be dead (in accordance with the contents of the previously undisclosed police radio message logs)...
"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when we first practice to deceive"...
