The police were in no doubt that Jeremy was guilty.
This belief became stronger when Jeremy was interviewed. Jeremy was extremley evasive, arrogant & negative.
'No comment', 'can't say', 'don't remember' & 'don't know' was said over 50 times. The 'yes' & 'no' answers were said in a singing tone while chewing a loose strand from his jumper. There were also a lot of errors made by Jeremy.
The police at various times thought they were going to get a confession. However none came.
In 1985 police interviews were written down, rather than taped. This meant Jeremy was given the time to anticipate the question and think of an answer. Which makes it even more surprising his answers were so poor.
Jeremys supporters unbelievably say Jeremy was so un coperative because he was innocent & fed up with being interviewed. But surely if innocent he would have been pro active in establishing this & assisting the police in their enquiries. After all, Jeremy had been very co operative with the police before he became a suspect. Why the sudden change in attitude ?
Jeremy admitted the caravan break in after the police asked him about it. Julie had already told the police, so Jeremy had no choice.
The police said if the interviews had been taped they would have got a confession. This I do not believe. Anyone determined & greedy enough to commit such a crime would have been determined to inherit & spend the money. Rather than weakly give it all up after some police questions. Jeremy had told Julie he was watertight, he believed his months of planning would pay off & was prepared to go all the way to live his chosen life. The police were going to have to get a guilty verdict at court.
Do other people believe Jeremy would have confessed if the interview was taped ?
