He says, "No, no, no, Mike", he says, "hear me out", he starts to beg me...

Jim recounts, "Mike", he says, "I was only driving the car that day", he said, "I was only going about my every day business", says he, "just gave a lift into town of a fellow I knew", he said, "I was only doing him a favor", is what Jim was telling me...

Jim recounts, "Mike", he says, "I was only driving the car that day", he said, "I was only going about my every day business", says he, "just gave a lift into town of a fellow I knew", he said, "I was only doing him a favor", is what Jim was telling me...

"Oh, yeah", says I...

"No", Jim says," I really do mean it Mike", he says, "I was as sure as hell only giving a mate of mine a ride into town", he said,"it was a favor", says he," just a mate doing another mate a favor", he told me, " nothing unlawful about a mate doing a mate a favor now, is there", he asks me and tells me at the same time...

I says to Jim, I says, "so, you were only doing a mate of yours a favor", said I, "and you end up being chased by an armed police unit", I said, "and here you are on remand", I said, "charged with robbing a post office", he replied, "Mike", he says, "you have got to believe me when I tell you that I ain't robbed any post office", he says enthusiastically, "Do I look like someone who would rob a post office", he says, "I ain't robbed no-one", says he, "I ain't a gun man", he said, "they have got the wrong man,, I am innocent", says he...

"Jim", I says,, "you look like someone who could have robbed a post office", I tells him, "you look like someone who could carry a gun", says I, "I'm not saying you did it", I said, "or that you are a gun man", I says, "but how can anybody tell just by looking at someone that that person is an armed robber", I says, "who has a habit of carrying a loaded gun around with him in a public place"...

"No, no, no, Mike", he said, "your starting to sound like the fucking prosecution, already", said he, "you haven't even heard my side of the story, yet", he said...

"Jim", I said, "why would armed police, chase you in a motor car, corner you, drag you from your car at gun point, arrest you, interview you, charge you with being the robber of a post office, if it wasn't you that did it", I said, "just answer me this", said I, "did the police retrieve stolen property from the said post office in your vehicle when they chased you and stopped your car", I asked him, "Yes", he said, "but I didn't bring it into the car", says he, "it wasn't me that put it there", he said...

"Jim", says I, "you would say that", I said, "you are in denial at the moment", I says, "but back then when police chased you and stopped your car", I said, "it's true isn't it", I reiterated, "that police found stolen property inside your car", says I, "property which I presume was stolen from the post office that you ended up being charged with", I says, "is that a fair assessment of what happened", Jim says, "it's looking that bad, is it", he says, "but I didn't do nothing except give a mate of mine a lift in my car", he says, "I was only driving my own car, giving a mate of mine a lift into town because he said he needed to do some shopping", says he...

I says, "so, the kind of shopping your mate was doing", I says, "was that he needed to pay a visit to the post office which got robbed", I said, asking Jim, "was it"...

Jim says, "that's not the point, Mike", he said, "I had nothing to do with where he intended to do his shopping", Jim says," I wasn't to know my mate was intending to rob a post office", he says, "if he did", said Jim, "it had nothing at all to do with me", he says...

"Jim", I says, "you were his accomplice"...

"No I wasn't", says Jim, "I didn't do nothing wrong, I only gave a mate of mine a lift into town", he says...

"Jim", says I, "just tell me this", I said, "now be truthful here because it's important that you tell me the truth if you want to have any chance of persuading me that you didn't do anything wrong", I said, "absolutely nothing wrong in this matter that you have got yourself embroiled in", I says, "now, tell me this, please", says I, "when armed police chased you in your car", I said, "and stopped you", said I, "and dragged you from the car", I says, "a part from finding stolen property from the post office that got robbed", I said, "did police also retrieve a firearm from inside your vehicle", I asks Jim, and he says in an instant, "Yes", he says, "they did"...

"I don't suppose it was a gun belonging to you Jim", I asked him, "was it"...

"No, no, no, Mike", he says, "I never saw the gun at all until my mate came running back to the car from shopping", he said, "he came running back to the car with a carrier bag full of what I believed to be his shopping", Jim  said, "he was out of breath", says he, "he opened the passenger door of my car", says he, "jumps in, throws his shopping in the passenger foot well", he says, "that is when I saw the shotgun", he said, "my mate jumps into my car with his shopping and a sawn off shotgun", he says, "he is out of breath", he says, "shotgun in his lap", he says, "and he is suddenly yelling for me to drive off quickly", said Jim, "Go, go, go, says my mate, get going sharpish", he said, "so I just starts driving off, quickly", he says, "not knowing why my mate had been running, why he had been out of breath, why he was in possession of a sawn off shotgun", he said, "we were speeding away along the busy high street", he says, "and no sooner do we set off than unmarked police cars and police units with sirens sounding, and blue lights flashing were coming after us", he said...

"Jim", I says, "did it not occur to you that the police who were pursuing you in your car wanted you to stop your car", I says...

"Yes", said Jim, "but my mate told me to keep driving", he said, "whatever you do", he said, " don't stop", says he, "so, I keeps on driving", he says, "we are driving along", says he, "with a convoy of police vehicles tagging along behind us", he said,"sirens sounding off",he said,"blue lights flashing", says he,"my mate is looking over his shoulder and he keeps yelling at me to go faster and faster", he said, "can't you drive any faster", he was yelling at me. I told him, I says, "I am going as fast as I can", I says, "but it don't matter how fast I go, I says to my mate, the police are sticking behind us", my mate is yelling,"faster, faster, faster", he says, and eventually were are turning up a track at the side of the road", says he, "we have turned into a quarry", he said, "and the car lurched to a stand still in the mud", he said...

Mike, what was the Cop's reason for pursuing and apprehension? Was it perchance a faulty stop-light?

Hi, it turns out that armed police had certain post offices under surveillance, which they believed might be targeted by a gang of robbers, and a post office under surveillance happened to get robbed by a person seen to run away from the scene and get into a nearby motor vehicle...
