Margaret Thatcher rode on the back of peak oil production from the North Sea Fields and oversaw a UK Housing Market Crash that brought out the term ' Negative Equity ' Many families lost there homes, livelihoods and futures through Her crusade but the Property Bubble that was Policy is airbrushed from debate..........
..and yet New Labour built less council houses than John Major as they were perfectly happy to keep voters who had switched directly from Conservative to Labour sweet on the backs of high property prices and the promise not to build on Green Belt land.

Steve, You miss the point, the sweeping change from a country that was heading to an economy based on financial services needed ready made customers in the form of borrowers from an organically driven base. There is nothing wrong with people owning their own homes but why were Local Authorities stopped from reinvesting in the former social housing structure they had just sold off. It was this new money that was bank rolling Thatcher in the form of Debt. Very few people buy their homes for cash. What did happen was before the eventual bubble burst, those with access to finance by whatever means were building substantial portfolios of property for the rental market ? This then led to a further strain on the social housing sector.

Yes I agree with that. The joke circulating in the 1970s was a couple going into a Building Society manager's office and the husband asking "Where do I stand for a mortgage?" The manager replies:"You don't stand..you grovel". There's no way that mortgages should have become so easy to obtain or that new council houses were not built to cater for people who couldn't afford to buy.

Whilst I struggled very hard to pay my mortgage I was also having to struggle to put myself through college to get my degree. Being self employed, I received no help. Many of my college friends, because they were on benefits, were getting their mortgages paid on the council houses they had been allowed to buy and paying no council tax and paid no prescription charges. They were also getting their degree courses paid for. We were frequently required to do residential courses which meant that I couldn't work and when I didn't work I didn't get paid. Perhaps you can forgive that I have little sympathy with what you portray as Julie's burdensome life as a trainee teacher.

Just before this turns into a free for all, I believe the solution to the many problems that We as a Country face, and it hasn't got bad yet. Are on forums like this where opposing views which have equal merit and validity can be thrashed out instead of leaving decisions and opinion to those  with vested interests, like Hedge Fund Managers who seem to profit at the expense of All of Us.

april  I think Julie had it very easy compared with some she had handouts from Jeremy and her little sidelines going to make extra cash like drugs and cheque fraud no wonder she always had a smile on her face.  Jeremy gave her £400 towards her holiday to Malta she waited till the cheque had cleared then made her statement to the police.  How could she take money from a man whom she knew had murdered all his family beyond me.

It appears to me that looking at some of those "revellers" were not old enough to have known anything about the Thatcher era?

That is true. It has been "handed down" but not experienced. That is my objection to that revelling.
