Are you prepared to say which player?  I do follow the darts and have even been to two world championship finals.

I met Peter Cadogan several times.  My parents were active in CND and worked with Peter Cadogan in his Committee of 100 days.  He was a member of the Communist Party until 1956.  He then flirted briefly with trotskyism before joining the Labour Party.  For a time he ran the South Place Ethical Society, based at Conway Hall in London.

Hi Ralf,,that's interesting. I think I saw him late 40's/early 50's,,but of course don't remember much at that time. I just remember heated " debates " with another uncle, who was a miner at a St Helens colliery, and the word communism cropped up. Dad had a book which I remember vividly, called, " Russias' Enemies in Britain " and doubtless it had an airing a few times.
When I think back,,I was surrounded by politics and politicians,,,but was never encouraged into any of it,,thanks to my mother.

I think you were replying to my post rather than Ralph's.  I met Peter Cadogan in the early 1960s and was aware of him in London in the 1970s.

It's funny how you take no notice of your background when growing up,,it's of no interest, until you're too old to remember  ;D  Though, saying that,,I'm fortunate enough to still remember vividly,a few things from my childhood.
This is actually the first time I've " name-dropped " in such a way,,as I've always kept this sort of personal information, under wraps. I've never been one for divulging my background, apart from boring  past family life.

And he has a big house with lakes stocked with carp!  i was at a charity dinner a few years ago with sports celebrities and BG was there.  For the auction he donated one of his boards and a set of darts.  I was the successful bidder!

So many amazing posts which I really enjoyed reading. If you believe in the Marxist theories of the working class struggle you will believe that she weakened the powers of the working classes with the trades union legislation. If you were a young innocent student like me you very likely went with the flow..

No, I never met John Lowe, but obviously I watched a lot of his matches on TV.  His battles with Eric Bristow were usually good value.

Yes they was always good to watch. He was the gentleman of the sport but always regarded as the bridesmaid to Bristow.  His wife grew up in the same village as us and my friend played with him when they were the magnificent severn?  He owned a public house called the unicorn and we used to have lockins on a sat night.

I think that about sums it up steve.  I dont think for one minute you could deny that the trade unions and british manufactoring industries needed reform.  The problem was she went way beyond that she completely destroyed them?  Despite her undoubted leadership qualities she also had weaknesses these included her inability to listen or take advice and no compassion for the working class.  Most of the MPs that are speaking on her behalf have not suffered or are likely to suffer over her achievements.  We often talk of a women scorned on this forum but this was a women seething?
