Sounds to me as if, at ther last minute, Jeremy thought better of going into a 50/50 financial arrangement with Mr Decker. Knowing how eager were banks to lend money during that period, had he really wanted it, Jeremy would have experienced no difficulty in raising the cash.

I have reread it BG and still don't see what you're suggesting.  It doesn't make much sense to me as he is suggesting JB said he could possibly buy it himself so whydid  Decker say he thought he was broke?

precisely.... dont see how Mike can think this proves that JB was broke. or why it would be withheld by the prosecution.

Was just thinking similar way myself Mertol. I mean next time I am short of 600 quid I know what to do...find some rich rellie and risk death or prison or indeed a living death makes sense to any well balanced person. Remembering of course that the many pschological tests have found Jeremy more well balance than the average person.

Hand written version probably says "UNABLE", not "ABLE", which then makes complete sense of the paragraph...
"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when we first practice to deceive"...

The statement at the beginning of this thread has now been added to the library.  It appears incomplete though.
