I believe it was the way farmers tended to live in those days.  I'm sure the twins just like Jeremy and Sheila before them were probably taught not to touch and didn't.  Unfortunately a suicidal paranoid schizophrenic would see the situation very differently imo.  (That is assuming it was Sheila).

I don't think you will be surprised by her answer.  A suicide attempt often leads to a diagnosis  of schizophrenia.
