Paranoid Schizophrenia, Delusions & Haloperidol
« on: August 31, 2012, 06:19:PM »
I was in conversation with a woman yesterday who worked at in a mental ward.  I asked her if she had worked with people who had paranoid schizophrenia and she said yes. My ears bent and I pelted her with questions.  I didn't want to highlight the case to her, I remained careful.

"In your opinion, would a none violent person suffering from PS pick up a gun a shot someone?"  Her reply shocked me. "Oh god yes" she continued. " You see, when someone is under a delusion, they are not aware of what they are doing and if she picked up a gun and shot someone, then she herself would not think that she was violent in anyway, it's the gun that would be violent and not her....Her delusional thoughts would expel her from the crime."

I went on and asked her about the drug Haloperidol and what consequences it would have if suddenly that medication was halved from 200 to 100. " That is a dangerous thing to do, we would normally reduced the drug to 150 first, cutting it by half can be very dangerous."

"How long dies the drug last" was my next question. " It normally lasts about a month, but a few days prior to the drug wearing off we would watch for the full moon episodes"  I interrupted here, "what does that mean"  Well she said " What do you related to the full moon"  I said " wear wolf" "exactly, and this is why we call it that, because the person changes and has more frequent psychotic episodes than probably earlier on in month. The delusions can be severe and the mind takes over"

I asked her if having this illness could result in that person killing members of her family and the answer was yes. Whether she was violent or not, she would be capable" My last question was. Although this drug is administered  does it stop a psychotic episode" "Yes of course, even though the drug its self makes them tired and sleepy."  I told her that that was not what I had read online....Her reply was heaven to my ears...." well, Joe Bloog down the road was in world war two, but he can tell you a different story because he was there"......... :-\ :-\ :) :) :)

The thing is Patti, if the guns were not available, this would not have happened.  It would have been much harder for Sheila or anyone in a psychotic state to cause such havoc without the accesibility of the guns and ammunition.   I don't suppose it occured to Dr Fergusson that Sheila would be in such a position, having also suddenly halved her medication. imo

Hi Maggie, that is so true. We have heard time after time that NB was so careful with his guns! yet, here we have a terrible crime and guns all over the place. Yes, there was a cupboard, but it was not one that could be locked and with small children around, it was not an ideal place to be. Sad!  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Hi Patti, the patient/s would swear it wasn't them who committed any crime, but instead either blame " the voices " or whatever implement was in their possession in which to do harm.
I also fully agree with the haloperidol and violence if the wrong dose is given. In Sheilas' case, she was so sick in her mind, that a half dose of anything would be lethal in that there'd be little or no effect of its effectiveness and so would give rise to uncontrollable violence. She'd have been like a raging bull in that house.
The murders came just 3 weeks after her having been hospitalized since her condition had rapidly deteriorated. ( Dr Fergusons' words ) Coupled with the suggestion of care for the children, tipped her over the edge.

But Maggie, Dr F wasn't the one who halved the meds, it was Dr W, a locum. Dr F recommended reducing 200mg to 150mg. For whatever reason Dr W took it upon herself to administer 100mg.

Hi Lookout, I wished I had taped the conversation, it was very interesting to hear about things like that from someone who has witnessed it all at first hand.  She also mentioned  adrenalin that becomes apparent with delusional thought, she said thoughts can continue for a long time, then comes the psychotic episodes.....I was careful not mention this case to her, for I valued her opinion, it was not biased in any way.....Hope you are well....What a week! lol  :) :) :) :)

I know, sorry I wasn't very clear....I should have said ....when Dr Fergusson stated that he didn't think Sheila was violent, or words to that effect...........  he had no notion that the situation which occured, could have occured...ie the availability of the guns etc. ;D

I believe it was the way farmers tended to live in those days.  I'm sure the twins just like Jeremy and Sheila before them were probably taught not to touch and didn't.  Unfortunately a suicidal paranoid schizophrenic would see the situation very differently imo.  (That is assuming it was Sheila).
