'Guests posting' / 'hidden members'
« on: December 09, 2011, 04:17:PM »
The forum 'who's on-line' shows that two guests are posting.  But guests cannot post.  However it also shows that two member's ID is being hidden.  So does that mean that those two hidden members are listed as guests, while posting?

Yes users with hidden profiles are shown as guests in that list.

Thanks.  I cant work out why a person posting would hide their ID because their post will be in their name.  Anyway it's up to them.  'It's a free country'.  Or maybe it's a police state?  I'm not so sure these days.

I am not sure that is what is happening here.  Administrators can see hidden users and none of the users at the time you posted had the same IP address as a guest.  I think the guests posting may be automated attempts to post spam, as happened a week or so ago when the forum settings were accidentally changed and the guests were able to register and then posted.

Paranoia maybe. I do it sometimes because it's happened where I've looked at an old thread which hasn't been posted on for several months and within minutes somebody else has posted on that thread, usually it's the same person. So yes sometimes I stick myself on hide. I notice Grahame and Smiffy also hide themselves.

Thanks.  My 'police state' jibe was a side swipe regarding the disgraceful withholding of the original logs and the impact this has had on the submissions process.  I am disgusted by this and have lost faith in part of the fabric of my country.  It is not the country I thought it was.

Buddy - you know where I'm coming from.

Because you click on their profile and it says when they were last active, do that several times over half an hour when they have made a dozen posts then you can deduce from that, that they have opted to hide when active.
Also when there is only me and one other person online (early most mornings) and one is hidden, but posts are being made, then obviously that poster is hidden.

Thanks for explaining that.   I have never hidden myself.  Maybe I should give it a try.

I tried hiding once, but Harley sussed me, and then Grahame blew the whistle. ;)

Guests cannot post. What you can is probably guests trying to post? I don't know? All I know is that we havent any posts by guests, except where members have posted and then left the forum.

I hid myself when there were trolls about. I just haven't bothered to change the setting back.

It really is just hidden users showing up as guest in the list. That's how the SMF software deals with it, you mods just don't see it because users aren't hidden from you.
