Nothing happened about and lies told about Syria. Gaza was a huge test for the world. The world failed the test. The world is full of what-if scenarios. Had Saddam Hussein co-operated fully with UN weapons inspectors at all times in the run-up to the invasion in 2003 we might not be in the mess we're in now.
