Some Light Relief...
« on: January 01, 2026, 02:49:PM »
I am not sure how I came across the following but having watched one or two I found them hilarious.

The first one is about New Year:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wnRorKB4Vw

Patrick O'Connor, Barrister, Doughty Street Chambers: "It will have to be a slam dunk.  It will have to be something of a blockbuster piece of evidence to have a chance".

I agree with much of the content, although at times it's a bit of a caricature. My parents barely visited a pub in their lives, and I never saw either of them tipsy. I do wonder whether the modern woman is happy, even with all the labour-saving devices at her disposal. We have made advances in medical sciences: smallpox and polio have been eradicated in the West, though I agree obesity and diabetes will be a huge issue for the NHS to tackle in future years.

Agree but that's what makes it somewhat humorous  :))

It's quite sad looking back, really. I think I'd rather look ahead, especially today of all days.

Sad?  In what way?  To my mind it was mostly much healthier in all ways.  There is potentially much to look forward to but the future is not without its problems!

Well, many people have passed, including my parents and members of the church. Sometimes we look through rose tinted-spectacles at the good times and forget the bad: the hard work, the often leaden dull routine, the tragedies such as Hillsborough, Heysel, the Bradford City stadium fire, the divisiveness of the miners' strike. Not to mention the astronomical increase in violence against the person offences.

As for health, I remember sitting atop smoky double-decker buses, Manchester landmark buildings covered in soot, the air pollution, the constant drizzle and cloud cover of the landscape. I'm perturbed about the increase in vaping nowadays, which is just smoking in another guise. The reduction in smoking amongst teenagers was the one success the new academy schools had, but now seems to have disappeared in a vapour of nicotine inhalation.

But your last sentence relates more to today?  And the rest yesteryear?

Well I was thinking more about junk food and obesity from poor diet and sedentary lifestyles.  And the downside of social media for mental health.

Looking back I do agree we didn't eat fast food like they do today, we got more exercise, mental health wasn't really thought about ( Sheila Caffell is a case in point).

The last sentence of the first paragraph was a late adjunct. For statistics there are now more offences against the person in Liverpool annually than in the whole of the UK in the 1950s.

And when did mass vaccinations start. I think it was the 60s.

I think it was a bit before circa 50's.

I saw this and thought it was funny but also horrific. It was a major event back then. Now I find myself knocking zz's out at midnight on NYE.  I remember that all the neighbours used to come around and a lot of sherry used to get served up. It was a jolly affair, and I had to be other neighbours' 'first foot'.  Also, back in those days I think bonfire night was bigger than Halloween.  Times change eh.

Why horrific?
