Going by Bamber's WS.

Time spent - around 30 minutes.

Upon arrival June, Sheila and Nevill were in the kitchen. They were talking about options for Sheila. He had something to eat.

Rifle minus silencer and sights loaded to 8-10 bullets as had seen two rabbits outside.

Returned to kitchen after firing no shots. Sheila, June and Nevill were still there. No one seemed distressed.

Magazine and bullets taken out of rifle & left in kitchen.

Rifle left in kitchen.

Neither Nevill or June told him to put rifle, magazine or bullets back in gun cupboard.

Going by his WS, seems he had something to eat prior to going back outside.

No wonder the rabbits had gone!

It is a surprise that -

Bamber chose to put the rifle in the kitchen & leave the cartridge and bullets out. Considering Nevill and June were in the kitchen.

Neville or June did not tell him to put the rifle, cartridge and bullets away. They were in the kitchen.

Nevill or June did not put away the rifle, cartridge and bullets away. They knew these were there.

No one put the rifle, magazine and bullets away although there were 3 guests at WHF.

He does mention Sheila's treatment & how Nevill and June could help her to reduce her problems.

The twins were with CC. June & Nevill would prefer that to fostering. Not that they had a choice.

Obviously if Bamber is gulity he may have had to get the rifle from the cupboard and load up on entry to the farmhouse.

The story about leaving the rifle out used to make it look accessible for shelia.

I don't think he felt comfortable with the tale of Shelia being able to load the rifle, hence this perspective he gave.

Other possibilities with the rifle are he hid it somewhere where it wouldn't be clocked by Nevill etc.

I believe he drove to WHF, so I also lean to the possibility he put it in the boot of his car and drove back to GH with it before returning with it to WHF.

I'm pretty sure he could disembark from the car to the front door of his cottage with the .22 without been seen. It's not a hard feat at dusk, may have covered it with a old coat or something.

Endless possibilities who knows.

So, in preparation for setting the scene, being fully aware that Sheila wouldn't have known how to load a rifle, he did it for her? Makes perfect sense to me. Despite being told from different quarters that loading is child's play/can be done with eyes closed, I've never understood how Sheila could have.

Bamber said he removed the magazine and a bullet from the breach.

So Sheila would have to load.

Seems like it was Clapham Junction in the kitchen.

June, Nevill, Sheila.

Bamber eating, loading and going out to shoot rabbits.

Then returning & leaving a rifle, cartridge & bullets in front of June & Nevill.

June was still up at least 50 minutes after Bamber left. But did not put away everything or tell Nevill to.

Nevill was still in WHF when Bamber left. But did not put anything away.

Why would he need to hide it when he knew where he left it and if one of the occupants moved it he would know it would be to the gun cupboard in the "den" which was all unsecured?

Are you for real?  He took the rifle away with him and then returned with it?  Give it up!

As Nevill & June were awake and up, doubt he tried to hide it somewhere.

Suspect he loaded the rifle, then put it back in the gun cupboard.

He may not have touched the rifle at all. But still had to go to supper to check on different things.

His WS with Nevill & June in the kitchen makes it less likely there would be a rifle & cartridge put and then left in the kitchen

Its a debating forum.  If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.  It's not my prob if you shoot yourself in the foot eg NB used redial when the only phone with redial was taken away for repair on the morning of 6th Aug  ;D
