Or sensed that here was someone prepared to do whatever it takes, regardless of legality and eithics?
He's claiming he is in jail for a crime he didn't committ. By the time De Stefano acted for him hadn't he been inside for almost 20 years?
I may be wrong with the dates. But I remember DI Stefano commenting on Jeremy's lie detector test. Which was 2007
Truthfully If I was inside for something I'd hadn't done and a man claimed he could get me out regardless of ethics and legality I'd snap his hand off. Or be tempted to. What's ethics and legality if you are wrongly in jail and your life is slipping past you through no fault of your own? The bitterness you'd feel would eat you up on a daily basis.
That of course is the innocence perspective. If you believe Bamber to be guilty then all the campaign of innocence from day one is just one big deciet anyway. Him employing Di Stefano to do underhand tactics just confirms that further.
Don't believe DI Stefano cared whether Bamber was innocent or gulity. Just wanted to put himself in the spotlight. However he impressed Jeremy enough for him to act for him. Whether it was genuine or he was impressed by potential shady tactics.
I don't believe Simon McKay, Euan Smith or anybody was exactly convinced of Jeremy Bambers innocence. But it's not their job to. Just put their clients case forward. Also the prospect of overturning one of the UK longest serving prisoners which is high profile is quite a a good thing to have on your CV!
