If the portable phone just had a 'last number dialled' facility, no harm in using it.

If it also had a 'time of call' facility, he would have to get back to his cottage ASAP. As the police keep time records of incoming calls.

Going by Julie it seems he was keen to use the portable phone.

Have to assume the portable phone just had one facility - 'last number dialled'.

Going by how basic phones were in 1985 & that was the only facility Julie mentioned.

No harm in putting the portable phone next to a deceased Nevill. Providing it was powerful enough to connect to Bamber's Goldhanger phone.

I doubt it had a time of call facility. As you said it was basic.

The model of the Bambers cordless phone was a envoy ( Douglas pike statement ) I looked for a model online but it was fruitless

Would like to know more about the portable phone.

It had a 'last number dialled' facility. If it also had a 'call duration' facility he would have had to have let his AM answer his call. Ending the call from WHF after a few seconds.

Putting that phone next to Nevill would have been good support to his story. Espescially if if it showed an answered call to his cottage.
There's confusion as to the telephones. I thought the portable phone shaped liked a brick and described as "Nevill's toy" had been collected by Mr. Pike and was therefore out of action during the murders.

Which neighbour?

Pete Kennedy who lived next door to him and appeared in the theroux documentary didn't say anything at all.

The neighbour who saw his car could have been fast asleep by midnight

Often wondered if Julie was still UK based if in the preceding years particular after the itv documentary would have done an newspaper television interview stating that she still stood by what she said. She would have been tracked down no doubt and asked for comment. Of course she could have declined.

Wonder if the case still haunts her till this day or even though she lives abroad she has been able to put it to bed in her mind?

Even if she is telling the truth the fear of Jeremy Bamber getting his convictions overturned must weigh heavily on her mind.

So I guess she has never even been able to move on ( at least peace of mind wise ) from whatever gulity or innocent way you look at it.

I don't think one can ever move on after such a trauma, though Julie has done her best. Despite all the brickbats that have been thrown at her and the years of laborious toil from Britain's top lawyers Julie's testimony exhibited in this thread has withstood the test of time.

Jeremy Bamber maintains his innocence. The whole campaign will continue till he draws his last breathe.

There is nothing Rivlin could do in reality except go down the dishonesty line ( which he had to tread carefully doing so) and the jilted lover. Not really a criticism of rivlin.

In the case of Julie Mugfords evidence it is down to simply hearsay whether you believe Julie Mugford or Jeremy Bamber however the summing up by Justice Drake was geared towards a conviction on the basis of his comments of the silencer evidence.

I have no copy of the judges summing up, but apparently it makes little reference to Jeremy Bambers evidence

Thus far, nothing has been said about Julie's testimony. Astounding, as previously she's she's come close to being accused of witchcraft! I found the dynamic between her and Rivlin very interesting. I'd go so far as saying, at times, she appeared to have him on the back foot -extraordinary for a man of his vast experience- at times, she made him look like a complete novice by the way she challenged him, causing comment from Justice Drake. Her evidence was clear, concise, and articulate. Not once did she claim to 'know' anything other than what she claimed JB told her. She accepted the offers of a chair, and a glass of water, but there appeared nothing of 'drama queen/prima donna' about her. Hardly surprising that Justice Drake said of her evidence "It has the ring of truth".

Drake never said that.

He said "Approach the evidence of Julie Mugford with a great degree of caution. Ask yourselves whether her evidence generally had the ring of truth about it."

I quite agree Jane. Of course she can be criticized for not coming forward immediately after the murders, and those delayed decisions and periods of inaction will haunt her for the rest of her life. But she tried to make amends in the witness box and get the belated justice the victims deserved. She has since made a life for herself in faraway shores, a model citizen by all accounts, and it would be churlish to wish her ill.

But the word "generally" included does tend to suggest Mr. Justice Drake was in sympathy with Julie.
