Was there just a matter of hours ago, Adam. Technically, it wouldn't be possible for him to cycle UP both roads. Bourtree is as close as makes little difference to the junction with Fish St/Church St -hardly worth getting on a bike for- but having gone UP it, he'd have to turn left to cycle DOWN Church St towards Maldon Rd.

Again Adam has intimate knowledge of the area.

As Google Maps shows. He would cycle up Head Street. Then turn when arriving at Church Street.

It gets dark at 4pm in the winter.

Wonder how thousands/millions of people walk or cycle around in the villages of England with no artificial lighting.

So it’s quite remarkable that one place where you’ll find barely any lights is the nearby Essex village of Theydon Bois, which has an Underground station meaning it’s only a short trip from the capital’s boundaries.

According to MyLondon, the villagers have consistently voted against the installation of such lighting for decades, out of fear that it would ruin the ambience of the place as well as adding to their council tax bill.

This is very strange and honestly you don’t even notice it at first, it’s something you don’t even think about during the day - however at night time you’ll notice it’s pitch black basically everywhere.

By walking and cycling in the dark. These are residential streets. There will be lights on from properties that cause some illumination.

Having lived in cities if not all my life I find it difficult to differentiate the difference.
