He may have wanted the farm secretary to know, since he may have moved stuff and did not wish to cause her concern.

He could have phoned her first, but that might have resulted in her offering to meet him there, which, I suspect wasn't the object of the exercise.

Why would things being moved cause concern?
The case was still open and whilst JB was not a suspect and Sheila was the culprit in police eyes, the family did not believe her capable. Thus there may have been local talk more generally of third party involvement.
He was giving reassurance.

I thought it was on the 16th of Sept that he broke into the WHF through the window?  This was four days after being questioned about the same?  Or have i got it wrong?

You are correct. he was asked about this when questioned on 12/09/85. Seems he must have felt it unimportant to do what he did 4 days after being questioned about access points.

Thanks, i was trying to find reference about this but can't seem to locate who he told or when?  My understanding was he did this after he was questioned and informed he was a suspect. There is always ways of looking at anyone's decision making, putting yourself in his shoes at the time or how you would deal with it, we could argue, he has just had to answer two days of questioning, he knows the window has been put foreward as a possible means entry and exit to comit a serious murder and rather than drive a few minutes back to his house to get his keys he decides to break in via the method he has just been acussed of using to murder his family?  Or was he just so arrogant or stupid to do such?  I honestly don't know the answer.

But, when you build a bigger picture about coincidences and formulate them together, it's this that puts doubt.  I put this in the same category as, leaving a loaded rifle out that was minus a silencer and sights used to shoot vermin that was normaly locked away, the phone call that can never be proved, the two shots to Sheila, the 999 call etc.

Others probably look at all this different and i totally respect their views and i welcome learning from what other posters have to say.

We can look at it from two ways of course.

I do tend to believe when he used to go out in the past in his teen years he probably used the window to get in and out. When he first moved back to the farm. If he'd been our drinking late or socialising and Nevill and June would have been in bed. Etc

At trial he confirms that June didn't like him staying out late when he was living at WHF. Perhaps out of typical mum worry. Or perhaps she didn't like the idea of waiting him for him to come home

So I do believe which ever side of the coin you look at it him going through in and out of the window to gain access may be perfectly true

I think also he confirms to police in his interviews he knows of many ways to get in and out of the house.

If innocent. maybe he was literally of a mindset of " bollocks to the police " he had just spent time in custody being questioned and accused of murder.

Didnt Jeremy have a key for the farm on his person?

Just found this ILB from the trial.  He had left his keys in London so he said?

The appellant claimed to have returned to the farmhouse within a day or two of his
release from the Police Station, i.e. a day or two from the 13 September, and gained
entry via the downstairs bathroom window. He said he had done this because he had
left his keys in London and needed some documents for his trip to the South of
France. The appellant did not accept that that had been an unwise thing to do bearing
in mind the circumstances nor that it would have been easy for him to have borrowed
keys from the housekeeper who lived nearby.

Bamber may have left the bathroom window ajar when he went for supper.

So didn't even need to break into WHF.

Otherwise he said in his police interviews he knew how to.

He could have got the keys from London in fairness. He went straight to London after getting bail.

I know the trip for France. Was september 16th.

He had the keys, he didn't need to reassure anyone.

He didn't even need to leave it ajar, just the catch open.
