In his police interviews Brett says he believes Jeremy to be innocent and could never have done this.
Did Brett have first hand knowledge? I tend to think if gulity he did tell Brett.
Brett had no affiliation to the family. I think Brett may have at the very least if Jeremy is gulity known or his plan to kill his family. I wonder if they made long distance phonecalls together.
