Tiger Nation
« on: February 04, 2023, 02:04:PM »
Taking my youngest grandson(8) to his first Hull City game in about 15 mins. Watching the World Cup and Football on TV has given him a severe case of ManCity-itis which requires immediate attention. It will be a lively atmosphere- Cardiff have a noisy away following. By 5pm today I expect to have cured him of his malady and to have a fully committed new member of the Tiger Nation :)

   e-i, e-i, e-i,  o,
Up the football league we go!

1-0 to the Tigers  :) 1 new member of the Tigers tribe  ;D

You either get it or you don't. You can only support your own team, anything else is glory seeking bandwagon jumping. Like supporting another family against your own. I was taken to my first Tigers game at about 8 years old and was taken in by the tribalism of the huge crowd. All chanting and knowing the same songs of support-a choir of thousands sharing the same goal. My grandson was clearly struck by the same sense of awe and belonging today.
He will now learn that success, like everything else in life, is relative. We're Hull City-not Man City or Real Madrid or Liverpool. There will be no league titles and European Cups for us. Success for the Tigers can be avoiding relegation on the last day of the season. We've had a few "successful" seasons like that. A few less "successful" as well.
     Avoiding relegation on the last day is no less satisfying than gaining promotion in the same way. They feel exactly the same. And anyway-Hull City don't need trophies. We "celebrate" this fact ourselves. To the tune of "Tom Hark"-All together now;

    The whole things daft,
    I don't know why,
    You have to laugh,
    Or else you'll cry.

   No Silverware,
   But we don't care,
   We follow Hull City,
   Everywhere

   Na na nana
   na na nana ;D

Sunderland and Tottenham for me.
Sunderland used to be one of my "second" teams. Being a Hull City fan means that I must despise Leeds United. It's the rules-I didn't write them. Anyway, the first FA Cup Final that I watched where I felt any emotional attachment to the result was the 1973 Final between Leeds and Sunderland. Underdogs and a division below Leeds, Sunderland went ahead through Ian Porterfield and then a heroic performance from Sunderland keeper, Jim Montgomery, kept Leeds out. It was brilliant-even better for you, Roch.
I remember it fairly clearly even now. Bob Stokoe celebrating on the pitch. Immediately it was over I was out playing FA Cup on the field with mates. Pretending to be Porterfield after scoring, mouthing the commentary as you celebrate.
Admittedly, my support was based on hating Leeds rather than loving Sunderland-but it all counts. Sunderland though became one of those teams who you follow the results of and like to see do well. A little soft spot for them, if you like.
2 or 3 years after this as an 12/13 year old and now allowed to go to football with friends unaccompanied by adults(it was the 70's) we had a home game against Sunderland. There were thousands of Sunderland fans there, easily the biggest away following I had seen at Boothferry Park up to that point. There was red, white and black everywhere. Sunderland were challenging for promotion and on a bit of a wave after their unexpected FA Cup success.
As I was strolling along with a couple of friends soaking up the fevered atmosphere, a Sunderland fan of about 19/20 (one of the big boys to a 12/13 year old anyway) leant over the barrier and took my Hull City scarf from my neck. I was pissed off but powerless. Sunderland could no longer remain one of my "second teams" after one of the bastards nicked my scarf.
I have forgiven this now, Roch, but if you know anyone who nicked a Hull City scarf around 1975/76- can you ask for it back?  ;D

As a life long Brighton fan I can fully appreciate these sentiments.

When I lved in Melbourne back in the 80s there was an ex Hull city player I knew, who played semi proffesional for a local Melbourne club.

As a life long Brighton fan, I'm sure you do Handyman ;) Your club, like mine, have had limited success but you take what you can. Brighton are flying at the moment 6th :o in the Premier League. You must be dizzy ;)

Come on you Tigers. City players celebrating the win at Millwall with an Adele cover to reach Championship play off final. Impossible to not smile.
