I agree that a child who has been overly criticised could well turn out to be very self-critical, but I also think that they might at times blame their parents a lot. I also think they would distance themselves from their parents, and Sheila didn't appear to do that. She lived in London but she appeared to visit the farm a fair amount. Jeremy certainly didn't seem to be able to drag himself away.

If a child grows up to be anxious, they might appear to be clumsy, but I don't think that means they're incapable of proper co-ordination.

Some parents adopt, not for what they can give children but for what children can do for them. They have fixed views of how their child will live it's life. The child is reminded constantly of what it owes by way of a debt of gratitude and subsequently feels a responsibility which may be impossible to break away from. There is usually a financial carrot which is dangled, making the child more dependent on the parents, keeping them tied to the parents and making escape more difficult.
