bird ringing
« on: August 11, 2012, 09:43:AM »
All seems to have gone quiet while the CCRC sort-out a way of turning down JB's latest appeal.
So, until they finish contemplating their navels, I'd like to hear other members' thoughts on BIRD RINGING.
This involves clamping a METAL RING round a birds leg! The poor bird is saddled with this encumbrance for the rest of it's life!.
recently, on a tv program we were treated to a ringing session. This gentleman was sitting there with a panic-stricken bird in one hand and a large pair of pliers in the other.
As he applied the sqeeze he looked up to the camera and said " the birds don't mind this"
Maybe he remembers being a bird in a previous life. Or is he just  a BIRD BRAIN?

I'm not sure you should be referring to woman as birds, surely ankle bracelets are just accessories?  ???  ;)

Ha ha H!

Clearly birds don't like the process of being ringed, but once that's over I don't believe the rings bother them. I'm sure patti will tell you that there are huge conservation benefits in better understanding bird populations and their activities.

I thought you were being jovial, especially with the bird brain comment, which on the face of it appears insulting to the birds you're standing up for.

I hade no idea that it was a sensible question, I apologise.

Upon greater inspection, there appears to be whole forums dedicated to the subject:

Hello The Jam.  Thanks for putting me onto the Bird Forum, I did'nt know it existed.
I'm sure I shall find others that feel as I do; how can anyone say that they don't mind?

Oops. Sorry. I thought you were talking about a marriage ceremony? I've not thought about birds biting their legs off. In fact I've never really thought about it as a problem, since the same method is used by bird conservation organisations.
By bird conversation I'm not thinking of talking birds by the way.

Hi Haughton

The ringing process does not hurt the birds if done correctly. The RSPB use this method, so it can study the birds and keep a track of them. It is vital in maintaining a watch since many birds are on the decline. A case study was done years ago for the little Blue Tit...for their numbers were on the decline. Lots of Blue Tits perish through the winter.

It is also important that we track the habitat of birds in order to protect their habitat for the future.

There are many bird watch sites and video set up under the guidance of the RSPB.  Cameras where set up at Derby Cathedral to watch the Peregrines a few years ago. I watched 4 chicks hatch. Out of the 4 that hatched...One fell, one flew into a wall and died, the other was shot with a lead pellet gun, but survived and was treated by a vet and, is now with a rescue team. The other one survived and came back the following year....They are all tagged and monitored, which it vital to help them survive.... So In MHO it is a good thing....The bird will sound an alarm when the ring is fitted, but it is soon over and it could save its life...

More and more of out habitats for birds are on the decline.....Mainly it is taken for man's greed.  :) :) :)

My dad kept racing Pigeons, he used to ring his birds. But all that was, was a smalll ID ring put on the birds leg, it didnt restrict it in anyway. For Id purposes along with wing stamps.
On Ilkley Moor Baht'at.

Hi Haughton. I have no doubt that there are some people who take matters into their own hands and ring a bird badly, to the stage that it either loses that leg or suffers death. I can only assure you that if it was  the RSPB then they would not allow a bird to suffer...

If bad ringing does exist and I am sure it does, then it needs reporting to the RSPB.  :) :)

I do support you haughton. I hate any kind of cruelty to animals or birds. I just didn't connect cruelty to ringing as it is a practice used by the RSPB itself on occasions?
