Title: Absence of firearms residue on Shiela, Clue?
Post by: mike tesko on June 17, 2011, 10:54:AM
There should have been firearms residue present on Shiela's body and nightdress, irrespective of whether she shot herself, or someone else shot her? Absence of any firearms residue to link her to the gun, suggests that she may not have been checked properly for its presence, and therefore this feature had the potential to be misleading...

Especially if she was shot at close range. Isn't it strange how we interpret things according to our own beliefs? We need a bit of sideways thinking on these things. No gun residue? Very interesting that there is none at all?

This is an interesting point which I had not considered before.  We know Sheila received two shots at very close range - possibly contact shots.  There would have been measurable residue on her nightdress and her body, partly from what was ejected from the barrel of the rifle and partly from what was ejected from the breach of the rifle as each spent cartridge  was automatically ejected.  In addition there would have been residue, probably including gun oil, cartridge lubricant, lead residue as well as cartridge propellant residue, on the rifle itself in view of the number of other shots which had been fired through it.  Given that the rifle was at some stage positioned on Sheila's body some further traces would have been expected on her clothing from contact with the rifle itself.  It is very puzzling.

Exactly! There SHOULD have been some gunshot residue on Sheila´s nightgown and hands wheter she was shot or whether she shot herself! Based on this, you have to question the forensic investigation.

How do we know no residue was found on her nigh dress? I have read that none was found on her hands, but have not seen mention of her night dress.
