A beautiful blonde is stabbed repeatedly in a frenzied attack on Wimbledon Common, her two-year-old son looking on. It could only have been the work of a mentally deranged individual, yet the Police fixed on the wrong suspect from the start, attempted to frame him through an ill-conceived honeytrap, and only issued an apology fifteen years later, during which time the real murderer of Rachel Nickell had struck again.

Wasn't Colin Stagg about 200 yards away in the park, walking his dog when Napper killed Rachel Nickell ?
The police made a lot of mistakes in this case. And they still make mistakes. The Stephen Port case being a recent one, where 17 policemen face discliplinary action. Rightly so.

It's unclear exactly where he was at the time. Why they couldn't match Napper's modus operandi with his other victims is a mystery, along with the flecks of paint on the son which were eventually matched to his toolbox, though years too late.

Napper was caught after killing Jacquline Bissett. Some policemen did suggest he could have killed Nickell, but were overruled.
-
Paul Britton was a Cracker esq criminal psychologist on the case. Which was the popular new way of working in the mid 90's for the police
I assume the police still use these experts, but don't publicise them as much. DNA may mean they are not needed so much now.
-
A member of the public did suggest Napper to the police after a photofit was published.
Napper was asked to go to the police to give a blood sample. But did not turn up. Two policemen then visited Napper to get this.
But the policemen didn't bother getting a blood sample as Napper was polite & made them a cup of tea. Napper also looked taller than descriptions although he walked with a hunch.
Getting a blood sample would have stopped perhaps dozens of further crimes, including Jacqueline Bissett.
The policemen should have been dismissed.

The famous actress?
Sorry it was Samantha & Jazmine Bissett.

I hope the son maintains his anonymity and has not been paid for his story. http://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/uknews/son-of-wimbledon-common-murder-victim-rachel-nickell-recalls-moment-he-watch-her-die-aged-two/ar-BBB6ZVk?li=AAmiR2Z&ocid=spartanntp

There are quite a few books about the case. Both before & after Napper was a suspect.
Both pre & post Napper books would be interesting. Although I wouldn't read Paul Britton's book as it would be biased to justify his actions.

Dont want to go off topic - but did you study anything about the Bellfield case?

I know the basics but not studied it.

It at least stopped charlatans like Paul Britton being seen as credible by the Justice System if nothing else Steve.

A lovely young man,Maggie and the image of his dad too. He was on BBC this morning reliving the horrific moment his mother was murdered.

Read his story Lookout, it must be comforting for him to be able to talk about it, she was so pretty his mother, such a sad story.

Yes,his mother was lovely. A victim of the most heinous of crimes in front of a toddler. Makes you feel sick.
This is why I feel strongly about the lethal injection. We don't need criminals like that in society. If I'd felt the same about JB,he'd have been no different as regards my thoughts on capital punishment.
I'd be more than a willing participator in administering the injection as that's how I feel about these murderers.

The one thing I agree with Ian Brady, he said when you are locked up for life, you should have a choice, there should be a pill on the table that offers the choice to live or die. But on the other hand watching the b###ard suffer seems more fitting.

Why is that such a surprise? He was there. The police weren't.

I'm inclined to agree, Justice. I think it's an irony that some guy who's already in prison for something heinous, is now doing 'life' for the attempted murder of Ian Huntley!!! Makes a bit of a mockery of life meaning 'life' but in my opinion it should mean exactly that.

Justice,my argument is that there are lots of people who don't have the privilege of reaching 77, through no fault of their own, neither do they have £100,000 at the back of them like that monster did. He didn't suffer a quarter as much as those who are at present struggling with illness or poverty.

Quite true Lookout, I couldn't agree more. I think the only good thing about keeping him alive he later confessed to the murders of Pauline Reed and Keith Bennet, which in turn lead to the discovery of Pauline's body. Him always wanting to take the easy way out (suicide) has always been denied him and at a cost of £10 million to us tax payers. The £100,000 has come from sick fans of his believe it or not.
-
That money should go towards victims of murderers.

I believe suicide is control and power for a psychopath, I doubt he suffered too much as there was always entertainment for him, people to manipulate and steal from. Poor old Brady bet he spun a good old sob story for his fans.

I don't believe in the DP BUT Brady didn't leave his victims with a choice. Given the fact that he wanted to die, I'm glad he lived so long.
-
I'd have liked a refund of my tax that has gone toward keeping the scumbag alive !!
He'd been treated better than the homeless and child migrants------It's insanity to keep the like of Brady alive and I can't understand the mentality of this justice system to allow it.

There was a documentary on this last night. The police made more mistakes than I thought.
I understand why Colin Stagg became a suspect. He lived near the location & several people suggested him to the police after a photofit was released on 'Crimewatch'.
DNA was being used then but there was no forensic evidence against Stagg. However the police still thought Stagg was their man. They had to release him however still released his name to the media. Stagg was now infamous.
After being questioned, released & his name made known to the media, the police then attempted their honey trap.
Surely Stagg would have spotted the honeytrap was a set up a mile off. Espescially after she started asking him about the Rachel Nickell murder. How did the woman get Stagg's address to start writing to him ? Stagg didn't confess during the honey trap.
Despite no confession & no evidence, the police still charged Stagg. While he was in prison waiting for trial, Samantha Blissett was murdered by Napper. It was suggested to the police the murderer could be the same person who murdered Rachel Nickell. But the police on the Nickell case still believed Stagg was their man.
The judge threw out the case straight away, calling it entrapment by deceit. Interestingly, Stagg's lawyer believed Stagg would have been found guilty if a trial had gone ahead. Saying the public wanted to find a culprit for such a terrible crime.
Forensic psychologist Paul Brittain rejected any link between the Nickell murder with the Samantha Blisset case or the Green Chain crimes.
-
It says that Napper was linked to the Samantha Blissett case due to a finger print on a window frame.
Surprised they found nothing on or around the two dead bodies. Napper must have been careful but made a mistake when entering or exiting.
The police had previously twice asked Napper to attend a police station to give blood samples during the Nickell investigation. Napper didn't attend. Once Napper was identified as the Samantha Blissett killer, the police on the Nickell case could have then done a DNA, blood & finger print check on Napper. But waited 14 years.
-
Colin Stagg is a decent bloke. Napper is insane. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/real-life-stories/who-killed-rachel-nickell-murderer-12130687
-
Another documentary said Stagg was on the common only a few hundreds away at the time Nickell was murdered. He was walking his dog.
This may be another reason Stagg was arrested. It wouldn't be hard to work out that Stagg would walk his dog on the common every day.
I read that after Napper failed to attend two appointments to give a blood sample, two policemen went to Nappers house. Because Napper was polite & made them coffee & Napper looked shorter than the description, the police didn't bother taking a sample. Napper walked with a hunch.
-
I feel for Colin Stagg, I think many people still believe him to be a murderer and that must be hard to live with.

When reading this timeline, the different London Police jurisdictions involved were totally incompetent. There would appear to be a culture at the time of internal bickering & politicking and of jumping to conclusions. A similar culture at the time also probably existed within Essex Police.

I couldn’t agree more, we can go further back and see how Taff jumped to conclusions that it was Sheila had shot everyone and committed suicide, jumping to conclusions without the proper investigation, and This is the problem why we’re here today, a proper investigation might have proved Sheila had done it, or it was Bamber after all?
