It is an experiment, but if it causes problems for members the settings can easily be changed.
It is hoped that regular guests will be encouraged to join as members and that some will become active members in due course.
What are the views of members? We can have a poll if necessary.

I already have a login facility which brings me directly on to the forum without the need to log in. Simple

It keeps chucking me out and I have to keep signing back in, but I don't mind. I could change me my setting that would keep me logged in... ;)

I think it should remain.
I'm surprised the red forum hasn't done it, having said that I might still be banned ;D

Is that the place that said they never ban anyone and that anybody is free to say what they like? ;D

'Removal of posts on mass' apparently. As far as I were concerned, they broke the truce so I removed several posts from several threads, then posted a rather rude post but it was the removals that did it.

Well done Jo.

That is a real shame Jo.
I must say though. Hands up to our forum, we pride ourselves for stamping out any attacks that are signposted towards anyone on the red forum. Maybe sometimes we are to strict but at least we can hold our heads up and say we are not the bullying kind in return.
OK we are not so squeaky clean we have our own in-house arguments, but when it gets really tough we try to stamp it out the best we can.
No one likes their posts editing or removed it can cause friction between moderators and members, but at the end of the day its the only way to keep peace and stop further arguments. However, I do believe in freedom of speech and sometimes its difficult for me to suppress it when things get personal. Its the way it is and its the way forward; otherwise we have a disruptive forum that no one would to join.
You're very welcome here Jo, we don't bite honest. ;D ;D ;D

I pursue the stupid and bite their tails off. ;)

Well done Jo.
Thank you. I loved the red forum but not the squabbling between forums and now it seems to have a 'bitter' element which spoils it but I'm not there anymore so I'm not forced to view it now.

Will it prevent google's bot from reading the text posted?

I think so.
-
If that's so, it will progressively become more difficult to (a) find the site in the first place, and (b) recover lost information.

I do not understand. Why will it become more difficult?

Sorry Reader, I don't understand either of your points? Why will it be more difficult to find? And what lost information are you referring to?

That's what the meta tags are for surely?

They are and the recent changes have nothing to do with altering any search parameters. You just can't read the board unless you become a member. Some people might be more tempted to join.

Why is it then that we can see loads of guests watching the forum?

Ghosts ;D ;D ;D. Not sure, but I'll find out!

I meant that when using Google to search the site for particular text, it can't provide a link if it couldn't read the site in the first place.

It's not a problem for me personally but it might be counterproductive if people just surfing the net can't get a flavour of the site in the first place.

I think most forums are closed net these days Steve. If someone wants to read what is happening on a form then why not join to read it? :-\ ;D ;D ;D

I think most people finding this site through Google, do a search for 'Jeremy Bamber' - that's how I found it.
-
Google searches have the advantage that they allow for spelling errors, whereas searches done within the forum do not, which can make it difficult (even for members) to find things that have been posted here due to the large number of spelling mistakes on the forum.
