My experience is people do often shut their bedroom doors when going to bed.
I do. Whether living alone or with someone. I would struggle to hear a lounge phone ringing, even when awake with a bedroom door shut. Even when living in a flat.
If 'sleeping like a log' I certainly would not hear a phone ringing with a bedroom door shut. Whether in a flat or house.
Jeremy's bedroom was upstairs, meaning a phone ring sound would have to travel through the lounge and travel upstairs. Then travel through a shut door. It is unlikely an awake person would hear it. Someone 'sleeping like a log' would certainly not hear the phone.
Jeremy must have left his bedroom door open. Or did he ?
-
What's that got to do with anything ?
-
Errr. If his bedroom door was shut, he would not have heard Neville's 'mysterious' (judges words) phone call.

Supposing, that is, he had a bedroom door.

Old telephone rings were loud. Jeremy was a young man not someone old and deaf. There are certain times within the sleep pattern where you can be wakened up more easily than at other times also.
As I've mentioned a few times,Jeremy on the lazy side anyway,so would have taken his time in answering, especially at that hour. I doubt he was one for rushing whatever he did,as he appeared to be a laid-back character, the same as he is now, otherwise his incarceration would have driven him insane if he'd been the type to have lived on his nerves. How strange that most criminals live on their nerves ! Because they are on the alert at all times, unlike dozy Jeremy, as he was in the early/mid 80's where people walked all over him.
Unless you can cast your mind back to the 80's,or earlier,I'd give up on the case if I were you. Times were a lot different than they are present day. You have to understand that era.

'Jeremy was 'lazy' and would 'take his time to answer', So why did Neville phone him ?
How Jeremy was sleeping when the phone rang is also important. Laying on his side means one ear pressed against a cushion. Reducing hearing capacity. Laying with his head under the duvet or under a cushion also reduces hearing capacity.
-
Ridiculous?
Who said Jeremy was lazy?
-
Ridiculous?
Who said Jeremy was lazy?
Lookout did.
And lots of other people.
What do think Sheila was doing when Neville phoned Jeremy ?
-
Ridiculous?
Who said Jeremy was lazy?
Jackie,,I own up to Jeremy having been lazy. I noted how bloody quick Adam was to say it was me,and I make no apologies for saying it because both June and Neville were always on at Jeremy for being lazy.

It actually goes in his favour if you think about it !

I did NOT say all of that, you flaming troublemaker !!

You're an absolute arse !!----------------HACKER !

Lying doesn't bother scumbags like you does it ?

Own up ? You cannot deny it as it's in black & white.
Do you think a 'lazy' Jeremy would answer the phone at 3.10am ? That is if he woke from 'sleeping like a log', perhaps with his bedroom door shut.

I bloody well owned up if you care to look at the posts ! Just sod off,I didn't post what you've just quoted, that's your horrible talk.

Depends on Jeremy´s hearing. We lived in a large house in Iceland - I could hear what people were saying even if they were WHISPERING on another floor at the other end of the house. They could never understand how I knew what they were talking about!
-
I like that,Alias. ;D ;D ;D I've got good hearing too thank goodness.

Even with you're bedroom door shut ? You must have good ears.

Or the house has excellent acoustics.

No, not closed, but I would easily hear a telephone ring downstairs with the door closed. You arn´t getting anywhere with this.
Jeremy´s cottage was super small, it wasn´t a large house.
-
Adam, why do you always quote your own posts? Do you think they are that brilliant that they have to be repeated - or? We have already seen it - it is super-annoying!
-
You said I was not going anywhere, in you're view.
But if Jeremy's upstairs bedroom door was shut and he was 'sleeping like a log' with one ear against a pillow, he would not hear the phone.
Lookout has said Jeremy was lazy and has previously said he would be knackered after 14/17 hours working. So may have ignored the phone anyway. So why would Neville call if the call would go straight to Jeremy's answering machine ?

I can't recall how many times you've asked that question or in how many threads. The only person who could have given you a precise answer CAN'T.

Your post is already there - in this thread. I don´t understand why you do this all the time. Is it to annoy us?

Nothing you say proves anything. Do you know the layout of Jeremy´s cottage? If not, you can´t deduce that he wouldn´t hear the phone. Do you know how Jeremy´s hearing was? If not, you cannot claim he did not hear the phone. Do you know how loudly his phone rang? If not, you cannot say he did not hear the phone.
If the phone rings in the middle of the night, it is normally bad news, and you rush to the phone.

My experience is that people who live alone, particuarly men, don't bother to close their bedroom door.
Even with it open the chances of a phone so far away waking him up woudl be slim. It would take him several minutes to answer and that is a problem because he had an answering machine that would have picke dup before he could reach the phone. If he had it off then it would mean Nevill sat there letting it ring for several minutes instead of hanging up to call someone else.
Where was Sheila during this and why would June still be in bed during it? No Jeremy supporter can ever provide a plausible explanation. Instead they change the subject.
Moreover, if this actually happened Sheila would simply have shot him upon discovering him on the phone not to disconnect the call and make sure the phone remained off the hook so no one else could call then march him upstairs to shoot him in the bedroom with June. In a psychotic rage she would just care about killing him, not be bothered trying to plan out where to do it and to make sure he is killed alongside June.

This is a discussion forum. Sadly 5 of the main people are dead. The other claims he is innocent and blames EP, the relatives & Julie.
So some of the discussion will be opinions and speculation.

Which goes to show that there are certain posts you either overlook or ignore. There really isn't much point in my repeating what I think may have happened because whilst I'm allowing for the possibility that it MAY have, you're denying it ever did.
However, I HAVE to pick up your assertion that "..............even with it (the door) open the chances of a phone so far away waking him would be slim"!!!!! SO FAR AWAY????? Have you the faintest idea of just how tiny is a two up/two down cottage built for a farm labourer? All the renovation in the world couldn't alter the basis dimensions.

I don't agree that it would take 'several minutes'. This is quite a large house but I could get downstairs to answer the phone in LESS then 30 seconds. OK, you have to add on the time it would take for Jeremy to wake up - but that could be seconds to minutes. I don't think it's impossible for Neville to have called Jeremy - I just find it VERY unlikely.

Shows people are different. When single I always shut my bedroom door. Habit I suppose as the door was always shut when mummy tucked me up.
Jeremy either did or did not. If he did, the downstairs phone would not be heard. He said himself he slept 'like a log' that night.

"Jeremy either did or did not" How truly profound.
If the doors to the stairs and bedroom had been removed and the phone was in the room the stairs led out of he'd have had little trouble either hearing it or reaching it.

Interesting point. Maybe there was a door at the bottom of the stairs. If that was shut he would not hear the phone. If that and the bedroom door were shut it would be impossible, even if awake.
Removed doors ?

Adam you talk as if you are a married man but always talking about rushing off for a date :'(

Maybe he slept in a vacuum or with ear defenders on? Fact is, this is a silly question because we have no idea if he would hear the phone - or not!!

There isn't much which can be done to enlarge a two up, two down cottage, but a way of making them more spacious is to remove unnecessary doors. One such door would certainly be the stairs door especially if the stairs had been changed to open plan.

Write to Jeremy and ask him, Adam. He is the only one who knows the answer.
btw, I uploaded a photo of Jeremy´s birth parents in the photo thread - first time I´ve seen what his mother looks likd. Don´t want to make a big fuss about it, so just a passing remark here.

Wasn´t Jeremy´s father married to another woman? Anyway, his biological parents married only one year after they had Jeremy. What a shame they didn´t keep their baby! :'(

My parents don't wake up if you phone them in the middle of the night, whether one hears it depends on how sound they sleep a swell as the location of the phone. Even if he heard it he could not get to the phone before the answering machine picked up and that is a problem for him.

Those familiar with the house stated it is time consuming to navigate the stairs. He allegedly was sleeping like a log and a phone from a distance is not going to make him fall out of his bed like it would if right next to his head ringing in his ear. After waking up he would have to make the decision to not continue to let it ring but rather to bother to go answer. The average answering machine would ring 5-6 times and then answer. It would have picked up and he thus would have had proof of the call had his claims been true.

Scipio, I have to ask. Time consuming as compared to WHAT? I suspect it is a normal 13 step straight stair case. He hadn't only JUST moved into the house so would have been totally au fait with moving around in it. I will agree that much "fudging" is done in two up, two downs but that is only likely to present difficulties to unsuspecting visitors. I can't argue about how many times a phone would ring before the answering device worked. Would it have been possible to have set it to ones own needs?
-
the police took the answering machine , and yes you can set it for as many rings as you want and and times you can obviously turn it off.
if the phone rings in the early in the morning when it is quiet , then personally I would always rush to the phone because I would think it must be an emergency , otherwise why would someone ring at that time. And Jeremy only lived in a small cottage - so its not rocket science. He could have got to the phone .
And I could easily get to my phone before the answering machine kicks in. Even early in the morning.
So all it goes to show is we are all different and I don't see the point of going round this AGAIN , because there is no definitive answer.

Jansus, your comment "...........there is no definitive answer" could be applied to 99% of the questions Adam asks.

I have never known a phone ring more than ten times when there is an answering machine. Today's automated answering phones on mobiles or via 1571 always come on between five and ten rings
There is no way Jeremy would have made it to the phone before Neville left a message. He was 'sleeping like a log' (fact), upstairs (fact) with his bedroom door shut (perhaps).

Perhaps you should do a study of how answering machines functioned in the 1980's. Saying "There is no way Jeremy would have made it to the phone...................." is just your opinion.

They described the stairs as cramped and difficult to navigate. Thus they said he would not be able to fly down the stairs he would have to walk.

that is not a fact - it is your opinion. It was a cottage , not a mansion with hundreds of stairs .
And on my old answering machine you could still answer it even if the machine had clicked in and as I don't know what the police found when they took the machine away , I unlike you are not going to make rash statements then claim them as fact.

Scipio, it was HIS home. THEY, whoever they are, may have found them difficult to navigate. The young home owner, whoever he/she may be would be unlikely to have the same problem.

Jeremy's actions after receiving Neville's phone call contradicts him being the sort of man to jump out of bed and rush to answer a 3am phone call. After eventually waking from sleeping 'like a log'.
His WS says he got Neville's call at 3.10am. But the police were not called until 3.26am. Even then he phoned a police station miles away. That was after phoning Julie. He then drove very slowly to WHF.
His laid back attitude even after hearing Neville's famous ten words, suggests a man who would have ignored a ringing downstairs 3am phone call.

Assumption.

It could quite easily have been a wrong number when the phone rang----------the local taxi, which does, and must have happened in the past,so as a consequence you wouldn't be in such a hurry to answer it. Jeremy would have had no idea whatsoever that the call would be coming from his father.
